  1. Is it possible to set the aspect ratio of an mpeg1 VCD compliant file to 16:9 so my DVD player will automatically add borders?

  2. Anyone? I guess I'll waste a $1 DVD and try it myself.

  3. what is the aspect ratio of the original file?

also why are you putting an mpg1(vcd) on a dvd?
    Why not mpg 2?

Why not invest a couple more and buy a DVDRW? It's fine for such tests and save a lot of frustration for proof-viewing. Just a thought.

Regarding the aspect ratio, you can't have a VCD file on DVD with 16:9. However, you can re-encode in MPEG-2, feed the encoded stream into an authoring program that supports 16:9 authoring and you're done.

For the above, I am assuming you have a VCD file that has been "hard" letterboxed. You will need to remove the blackbars (can do that with Tmpgenc).
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

  6. unfortunately, my DVD player doesn't play RW DVDs

i'm not going to reencode it, but i think it will display correctly on a DVD. i'll try it this weekend and let everyone know how it works out.

it's the opposite situation here, no black bars were encoded so the 16:9 image gets stretched to fit on the 4:3 screen. you're commercial DVDs don't encode black bars at the top and bottom, they simply set the file's aspect ratio to 16:9 and your player adds the black bars for you. however, they are usually encoded at full DVD resolution in mpeg 2, not at 352x240 in mpeg 1.
