  1. According to this site:
    http://www.inwards.com/~dbb/

Max video bitrate = 2,600,000 bits per second
Max audio bitrate = 384,000 bits per second
Max total bitrate = 2,824,000 bits per second

If I'm not mistaken, doesn't this mean that there is no point using an audio bitrate less than 224 because, combined with the video bitrate (which can't be more than 2,600 kbs), it still won't exceed 2,824 kbs.

Elsewhere I've seen people say that 2,600 bps is the max TOTAL bitrate. Who's right?

Yes, I agree - was very confusing.

I think the main confusion is that the standard set by Philips & Co. said "Video : MPEG2 VBR, average bitrate up to 2.6 mbps" - notice the "up to"

Many other companies use as a "normal" video bitrate 2.4mbps (Dazzle for example)

Having checked the max. bitrate on most DVD Players for SVCD's, you'll find that many can't go above 2.5mbps, so if you want to play safe, you know what to do.
