removing subtitles from movie

how do you remove subtitles from movie?

have a svcd movie and would like to know how to remove the subtitles, have been done badly, or edit them to improve the quality etc

what format should the movie be in? mpeg or avi

what s/ware should I use, unable to find any "how to's" on this.

any help appreciated, thanks in advance

It depends on how the subtitles are done. If they're at the bottom in the black part of the video (assuming it's letterboxed), then you could reencode with TMPEng using crop frame to cut off the bottom and replace it with black.
