I have recently discovered that Saving Private Ryan won't play on my setup if recorded on DVD-R. (I'm sure there will be more titles like this) DVD-RW works fine. Every other backup I have is on DVD-R and they work fine. So instead of banging my head against it I ordered a pack of DVD-RW's. May just use these exclusively. 2 questions.
1. Any cons to using DVD-RW's instead of DVD-R's?
2. Is there a way to "lock" a DVD-RW so it can't be erased/written over?

1. Far less compatibility.
2. Finalize it, then you have to erase it in order to write over it.
My guess would be you probably just ended up with a bad burn on the one movie. There is no reason on earth that one movie will not play on DVD-R while all others will. -
I ripped it twice, and burned it 3 times... I'm using dvdXcopy. I did just discover that if I burn the dvd-r without ifoediting out the annoying THIS IS A BACKUP screen that it works fine. With this particular movie deleting the playback for that screen fubars the dvd-r's...no idea why.
I also just found out that the ifoedited dvd-r's I made work fine in my xbox...but not in my sony dvp-ns300.
Must be a particualar problem with that rip/edit/burn/player combo
I got 50 DVD-RW's on the way for such future occurances, hopefully there won't be many. I like the ease of dvdXcopy so far (except for this movie!) -
Ummm, you should have donwsized DVDxCOPY after it was ready to burn , delete the .txt archive and used either NERO 5.5.917 or Recordnow DX to burn it as a data DVD, solved my brothers problem with his SONY 500UL and private ryan plays back perfect using a Ritek .86 cent blank media and it not only plays back in any DVD player but also his XBOX widescreen mode and PS2.

Actually after I ifoedit them I use RecordNow to burn. Trying Nero now as a last ditch attempt.

Tried nero too. Still no go. I think it's a compatability problem with the player.

They fixed the problems in the newest version of nero peeps. (5.5.10.7b) Just use the DVD-Video template

SWEET! 5.5.10.7b did the trick! Thanks for everyones help. Now I have to figure out what to do with 50 blank dvd-r's
