  1. I am new to the wonderful world of converting and burning files. Although I have managed to master most of the formats with a reasonable success rate, I am having problems with AVI files. Everytime I select an AVI file, either to move, or play, windows explorer crashes. This also happens when I am trying to use TMPGenC to convert the AVI files to MPEG files. I get as far as clicking on the browser to select the file, as soon as the file is selected TMPGenC crashes. I don't know whether it is a problem with Windows XP, or the AVI files, or both!
Has anyone ever come across this before?

  2. I have had similar probs with avi's, i.e., won't let you move them or delete them, can't view thumbnail, or if you have thumbnail view selected then system crashes. I know that as for deleting them, you can right click and select properties and then delete them quickly after that process.

I don't know why the avi's do this but I do know that my problems dramatically decreased after I tried to solve another problem. I was looking for a fix for a problem where my desktop icons kept refreshing. I did a Google search and found a procedure which lets you change the cache size for icons in the registry. I did this and although it didn't resolve my desktop icons problem, I didn't have the avi probs as much. Also I would guess that the avi's causing the most problems are downloaded and rather large, at least that was what I found. I don't know if this post helps but I've been there and asked the same questions from the forum without much luck.

    Goodluck.

This is thanks to Greyhair who had helped me on this.

Registry Edit for WinXP Prof. If unable to delete .avi’s from Explorer

Go to RUN, and type regedit

Browse and remove the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{87D62D9 4-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}\InProcServer32

Delete the lowest folder …. leave the upper structure and just delete...\InProcServer32
