  1. I'm a newbie to A/V capturing...

I'd like to capture some old music clips off some VHS tapes I have. Should I capture a whole string of clips in a row and then later edit/separate each music video... or should I capture each music clip one at a time. Reason for this is that I want to then burn them as a SVCD with "chapters" so that I can choose what clip I want to see in any order at any time. If there are alternative methods, etc. I'm open to any suggestions...as I said I'm a newbie to this.

Also, reading through this forum, most people talk about programs they use to capture, encode, etc. like Virtualdub, TMPGenc, IO_AVI, iuvcr, etc. One thing I noticed is that people rarely seem to mention/recommend any commercial software like Sonic Foundry, Ulead, Adobe etc. for doing these tasks. Is it because Virtualdub and the like are free and the others cost money to buy or is it really the "free" software actually produce better results than the "non-free" software.

    Cheers,

I`ve sent you a Personal Message but for others this is what I use :

1.capping - vdub (for music video use , it can fade the picture in and out)
VDub will actally tell you frames dropped , cpu usage , allow you to change cap codecs etc etc .
2.encoding - tmpgenc - why bother spending £6 billion on CCE
3.authoring - Ulead DVD Movie Factory - it does picture (still) menus , submenus , background music , vcd , xvcd , svcd , xsvcd and er .. DVD and it keeps videos in sync unlike other programs I could mention

Obviously if I had 20 million pounds I`d use cutting edge software/hardware , the stuff above is for a cheap as chips approach to it , whilst still not sacrificing much quality IMO . Yes , you can do it all for free but the above also allows ease of use IMO .
