i've tried to backup sum of all fears using dvd2one but the copy does not play like the original. the problem is that the original automatically plays subtitles during non-english speaking parts of the movie, but my backup doesn't. i've tried selecting all audio and subtitle tracks but you have to manually select the subtitles to play when watching the backup.
i've encountered this same problem when backing up LOTR. when the characters speak elvish a translation automatically appears on the original and not on the backup.
does anybody know how to correct this?

I think it depends on the authoring soft that you're using.
When compiled with DVDMaestro subtitles are enabled automatically at First Play.
When it was authored with IfoEdit I had to enable the sub picture stream manually.
You can probably adjust the setting in the IFO file itself instead of re-compiling the entire DVD, but I haven't figured out how yet.
