Odd problem - captures fine, but white band in playback !?

Hi all!

I have captured totally fine, converted to VCD burned my movie and am very pleased with it.
It plays fine on my PC and looks good. It also plays fine on a friend DVD player which is VCD compatible.

BUT, when I play it on my DVD player (which is also VCD compatible) there is a light area, like a lighter band that goes accross the top of the screen.

It takes up about just under a quarter of the screen and is very odd.

Why does this show up? I have never seen this problem on my TV or DVD player previously... I just cannot understand it, it is obviousley mainly viewable in dark scenes.

I must stress through that it is not a solid white band, it is transparent and just gives the effect of lightening the picture at the top.

I have made a mock up of the problem and would be so grateful if anyone could explain why this happens? Remember, this image is only to demontrate, it is something I have made myself.

Just quickly, this does not seem to be the same problem that other people have reported about getting a solid white bar through the centre of the screen.
I also do not think it is macrovision as the source is digital TV.
Its just really odd how this only happens on 1 certain DVD player on 1 certain TV set.

Just a guess but do you have your DVDplay and TV set to the correct aspect ratio?

I have borrowed a friends DVD player and tried various combinations, here are the result.

Lecson Player + our TV = the white bar.
Lecson Player + widescreen TV = fine
Lecson player + portable TV = fine.

It seems to only happen on our main TV set and I cannot for the life of me understand why ?
I have tried different SCART leads and unplugged the digital set top box in case of interference... but nothing... the white bar is still there.

The thing is... other VCDs play fine.
Why is it only this capture I have done and why does the problem show up on some players and not others?
