  1. hi

I've installed my new sony dru500a in the hope of backing up my dvd collection.
Out of 15 tries I have managed to make TWO successful backups.
    The rest have been coasters.

The media I have tried are Monarch 4.7gb DVD-R and Etech 4.7gb DVD-r discs.
    One successful burn on each.

The backups were created using DVD Decryter and DVD2One.

The burning program is Record Now which came with the Sony burner.

I rip the DVD run it through DVD2One and then burn the files at 1X speed.

The burn gets to about 95% or more sometimes then I get the 'There was a problem writing to disc' message.

However when I did 'A Knights Tale' the total space required was 3. something GB. This burned fine.

I am led to believe that the the files are too big for the DVD-R discs.
But using DVD2One the files total 4.36GB so sureley these should fit on
    the DVD-R discs??

    Any help/thoughts appreciated.

  2. 4.36GB is near the limit of the media with about 20MB to spare. Why don't you try the latest version of DVD2one which allows you to adjust the final file size and set that to a lower number. Also take a very close look at the media you are using at the outer edge for any bubbles or layer de-lamination. I had some Verbatim 4x DVD+R media that had these type of problems and would record up to 4GB just fine but after that caused errors.

  3. Hi Thanks for that, I'll give it a try.

I thought it might be something along those lines but wasn't sure.

I'm doing Alien 3 the long way rip with DVD Decryptor and re encode with
    CCE author with Spruce Up.

Total file size (if my calcualtions are correct 3.9GB all in)
so i'll see how that goes.

If it means doing all my discs that way for a sucessful burn then so be it!

Any recommendations for good cheap DVD-R media in the UK?

    thanks again for the info

I had similar problems with the SONY. Cure proved to be upgrading the firmware. Mine, although purchased just a month ago, proved to have a "d" firmware, while the latest from SONY was "g".

Several disks (DVD-R and DVD+R) would not be recorded and with the new firmware and Nero 5.5.10.7b, all is well. Never had trouble with DVD-RW and DVD+RW media before and after the upgrade.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

Stick with Nero. Got coasters using -R/-RW and any of the packaged software with the Sony drive and my Win PVR250 card. (ULead )

Now that I burn with Nero I've had error free burns.
