  1. Bought some 2x white label dvdr media, nero (latest) only burnt it at 1x so shopped around for alterative burning programs. Came across Alcohol 120% which when reading the blank disc claims it can burn at 16x (wow).

Is it the program or just kak (burning on sony 500a with "g" firmware)

    Also.
Is there a program to test top burn speed of blank dvd's.

PS Try'd other media with Alcohol and got simular results. Ehh.

    Enjoy

Burning DVD @ 16X? Well, not just yet.

I can guess where the figure relates though. Single speed for DVD is roughly 8X compared with CD. (1X for CD is 150kbps, while 1X for DVD is 1380 kbps).

So perhaps the s/w you mentioned try to unify burning speeds. Not much of a deal, though. Just claims it can burn your 2X media at 2X speed.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

  3. Talking about ripping speed, I just got the Cendyne 4x drive but I cannot rip a movie faster than 2x while I could go up to 7x with my lit-on drive. Is there a way to unlock the drive ?

    Thanks,

    Sade

  4. Alcohol 120% is damn fine software but it's mainly meant for CD's. The DVD stuff was put in on a whim and about all it will do is backup images and burn them. For CD backing up/image making and virtual drives there is no better software, though.

  5. Sade - No. You can't improve the ripping speed. Many DVD-ROMs are locked at 2x ripping speed for CSS encoded discs (or all discs). After all you only need 1x to play movies

Sorry, best bet is to install both the DVDR and DVD-ROM in your PC.

  6. 16X !!!, damn!
    No, really though
I think I know what that is
    16x CD speed
my copy of DVDMF version 1 offered dvd burning at either 9x, or at max
clearly I cannot burn at 9 x or I'd be testing and timing and seeing if it failed, then telling everyone what I did
    1 x dvd is 1350 kb/s I think
    1 x cd is 150 kb/s I'm sure
    so 9 x cd is 1350 kb/s
    and (dunno about this)
    16 x is 2400 kb/s (or 1.777777777etc speed dvd)
1.7 sounds kinda odd, but what are the limitations of the software when interfaceing with a dvd, sure it works, but what about info reporting.
    anyway, my 2 cents worth.
(can't wait for da media to come in (200) and test this 1.32 to 1.31 firmware"downgrade" for 104/a04)
