I've been capturing for about a year or two now with my ATI AIW Radeon 32 DDR AGP.
before now, i could usually resolve my capturing/editting probs by thinking really hard or reading some of the guides here..now im stumped)
Up until a while ago, the majority of the time I was using MMC for my captures....ugh...
I got fed up a long time ago, but until recently I hadn't done anything about it.
For months before getting my card, I read all the virtualdub guides thoroughly, merely assuming that my system was fast enough for it.
I resorted to MMC because when I got my card, virtualdub didn't work too well...as you can guess...i dropped lotsa frames...
Assuming that my main reason for dropping frames was my slow harddrive (i was using a 5400 rpm, 40 gig drive), I purchased a brand spankin' new WD 120 gig drive...7200 rpm...AND it was one of those nifty Special Edition ones with the 8 mb cache buffer....
I thought my troubles were over and i'd be experiencing capturing and editting bliss ( aside from the natural and frequent problems with my ati card).
I was wrong...
While virtual dub (im using 1.4.13 until im 100% sure that th 1.5.1 release is as great as the previous versions) would capture, it would only do so up to 352x240. This is the case whether i use huffy or the picvideo mjpec codecs...
They both work wonderfully at taht res.
Huffy, at any higher than 352x240 (be it 480x480 or 720x480, or anything in between..though i dont think i'll ever be able to go as high as 720x480..but it'd be nice) it drops a frame every few seconds...im using the settings that are in the guide https://www.videohelp.com/mjpeg.htm
if i use picvideo..then it does the same...regardless ive i use 1 or 20 on the quality slider thingy..
this is VERY VERY frustrating...
besides the massive harddrive upgrade..the last attempt at trying to resolve this was maxing out my RAM.
(I'm never buying an HP again (im building my own from now on..)...i was stupid at the time i bought it..but then again..its more of a 'jorwex' pc now..cuz of all the upgrades ive put in it...........)
anyways...its 768 mb (crappy for maxing out, eh?)..and SDRAM at that..
at least it was better than my oem 256.. that gave me the results i have now (constantly) for about a week...but i still couldnt capture higher than 352x240.....
SO PLS PLS PLS HELP!!! i've only waited this long (1 and 1/2 yrs or so) cuz i figured people would suggest adding more RAM and HDD space/speed...now that i've accomplished that...i need some direction...
o and btw, i reformatted like 3 days ago...and have defragged once since then..so i think that issue is out....
AND i did the extensive tweaks found at vidguys for winxp...and made a separate hardware profile with only the essential components enabled....
should i use win2k instead? will that make a difference..or a significant one?
im willing to try anything at this point..
forgive me for the long post...its late and im..well bored and i get a little carried away sometimes...and this post is like 1 and 1/2 yrs in the making...(and i wrote more than half of it and accidentally closed the window....so im trying to remember if im missing anything that i said before...)
THANKS~!!!!!!!!!!!!1

i let my capture at 720 x 576 run for more than just a few seconds (usually i just see if its dropping frames like mad or not..) and it did drop alot in the first 30 secs or so...afterwards, it slowed down...and then even more, and more..until it dropped a frame every few minutes
..
so i guess thats ok..but can anyone recommend anything else i could do to fix it so that it doesnt drop frames immediately? cuz sometimes if im watching something and i wanna capture it spur-of-the-moment, i wont like it if for the first few minutes its all choppy..
thanks! -
The via chipset is notorious for being a bottleneck in video capturing. Make sure you download and install the latest 4 in 1 drivers. That combined with having to use the wdm to vfw wrapper may really cause you to drop frames. You might try capturing a sample with amcap and if that works without drop frames find another wdm based capture program - iuse iuvcr with my bt878 based card. Good luck!
