NAPA DAV310/309 tests. Post results here.

I've been reading all of these post about the NAPA (I personally own the NAPA311). And I too experience all the problems of playback that everybody else does . However I was thinking that maybe if somebody actually found a way to burn VCD's without choppyness (Which alot of you claim that you have). That maybe those people could create a template in TMPGEnc that all of us could use to burn vcd's without choppyness to make them work in NAPA. Just a suggestion. Thanx

I HAVE ALSO BEEN TRYING TO CONVERT A NONCHOPPY VCD. I PICKED UP TIPS FROM THE FORUM AND OTHER WEBSITES AND HAVE COMBINED THESE METHODS TO MAKE A KINDOF GOOD VCD.
FIRST OF ALL WHEN YOUR IN DVD2AVI SELECT THE OPTIONS normalization AND forced film.
THEN IN TMPG LOAD YOUR AUDIO AND VIDEO AND GO TO SETTINGS.
UNDER THE VIDEO TAB I PUT THE FOLLOWING OPTIONS.
Stream type: mpeg-1 video
size: 352 by 240
frame rate: 23.976fps
Rate control mode: CBR
Bit rate: 1123
vbv buffer size: 40kb
UNDER THE ADVANCED TAB I PUT:
: Non-interlace(progressive)
: Bottom field first
: 4:3 525line NTSC
:full screen(keep aspect ratio)
I also chose deinterlace on the options below

UNDER THE AUDIO TAB I CHOSE:
: mpeg-1 audio layer 2
: 44100
: Stereo
: 224
I selected error protection below.
UNDER SYSTEM TAB I PUT:
:mpeg-1 video-cd


Finaly after i converted it i burned it with nero.

Im not super expeirienced with all this stuff but i know enough to figure out a little bit. If you guys have any improvements to the way i did it or your own way please post it because i know that we are all tired of the stupid choppyness.

do you guys think that if we email the napa company and asked them if they could figure out this problem of converting a dvd to a vcd so it will play fine on the napa player they would do it. we could tell them that we have many intrested costumer wanting to buy the napa player and thats no lie because i already know of at least 5 people that would like to buy the napa if it didnt have this stupid choppyness problem. Tell me if you think it will work.

Yo Stephano88, I'm down for e-mailing the NAPA ppl about this problem. I'm just posting my response on the forum. However I think that we should all send the same e-mail so that they know that there is a large group of people behind the whole e-mail thing. If somebody could write up a good e-mail and post it on the forum, then we could all just copy and paste the e-mail and send it. Just a suggestion.

P.S. I took my own edvice and created a template for both TMPGEnc and Nero (5.0) that you can use to burn VCD's that don't skip on the NAPA311 Player. . But there is one problem, when i tried it on a dvd rip (divx) of Rush Hour that I had the VCD did not skip but the audio got out of sync the more the movie progressed. Maybe someone could look into this and fix it. If you would like to try out the templets just write me an e-mail so I can attatch the template to it. Laters

I nwo have a real VCD and I will try and get a look and see what the actual setting are. Then I will try creating a movie with the same settings and then try copying the VCD in case it is the actual media that is the problem.

I may also try replacing my PCI Happauge TV encoder with the USB one. The latest one encodes directly to mpeg so that may be in a format the DAV310 understands.

Though to be honest, I've pretty much lost interest in the DAV310 now. Too much effort. I get the feeling the people designing the software for the thing just took a bunch of reference mpegs and VCDs and tweaked the code until it worked with them. Not to worry that other in-spec stuff doesn't work eh? Just get the thing out the door. I already had to scrap one mpeg CD I burned because it doesn't like the way LAME encodes stuff (never mind that the mpegs played perfectly well on everything else) and I haven't produced *one* VCD that was really satisfactory yet.

OK, so we can't record VCDs that playback, mpegs are hit-or-miss. Is it time to bring up the words "class action"?

I agree, my Napa, Dav311 unit is far below even acceptable quality when it comes to mp3 playback. if you have a high pitch sound in your music, it sounds like mickey mouse does the back up vocals! What's up with this thing?!!! Vcd playback is jerky to say the least, and all the solutions I have found only make it less jerky. The Napa dav311 is a very good idea, gone terrribly bad. I have e-mailed amax, about these problems three times, and i have had no response.

i have a DAV-311, and when playing my CDs i noticed that when the lid is touched, the 311 thinks it was opened/closed...
i dont know if that was only mine, or if it happens on alot of 'em.... what i wanted to post was a fix for it.... ir requires you to open the 311 (take appart) and the the button for the lid is (front left), all you gotta do is tape the button down..... it's not hard... i'm trying to figure out how to just solder two points on it to make it think the circut is bridged... because its better to solder it than to have a peice of tape in it....... .

no you don't have to have the ac adapter plug in. you need it to be charged. i have the 311, and you need it to be charge somewhat for it to paly the vcd, it is better to have it plug in tho. Sorry for lateness, wanted to clear this up.

you can't b/c its has to be in video mode. and there are only 74mins 80mins

i use music match and convert it to 112k and i dont get echos.... but it does sound like when you have a bubble in your throat though.......

I bought a 310 around chrismas time and just thought of something. If the player can have mpeg1 palyback and mp3 playback, technicall it has the makes for a divx playback if someone makes a mpeg hedder file. Anyone up for this?

I just tried a bitrate of 1122 in Panasonic Encoder and it works fine on my Napa 311
it wasn't with TMPGENC with the same bitrate and no change scene detection...

I just bought a Napa311 and have the following experience:

It works horrible in car. the antishock mechanism does not function well when it comes to bumps.

So far it works for every single VCD that I bought from store or homemade.

As far as MP3 is concern, it's performance greatly varies. Sometimes it work properly, but most of the time it skips songs in the middle of the songs and it becomes very annoying. Instead having all songs in one directory, I also try to place the songs in various folders, but it still performs disappointly. As far as biltrate or echo is concern I don't have that kind of experience.

As far as playing regular CD is concern, the Napa gives on a hissing sound every so often.

the bottom line is that I don't have had good experience with the Napa311. if anybody is looking for an MP3 player who can play MP3 CD, I would recommend the AVC Soul player, but it does not play VCD. Go to http://www.avcsoul.com to check it out.

Well, i tried the 1123 option in cbr mode on my dav311, and the results, though better than the ones for the 1132, are still un-watchable.
