dvd2svcd recommends using 2.50 and not 2.66...says there is compatiblity issues. i use 2.5 and it works flawlessly with dvd2svcd....so i say why change..

there is a new much more affordable version of CCE coming out. That would be the one to purchase as it is very cheap (about $58 ).
and it does xpass vbr mpeg2.Corned beef is now made to a higher standard than at any time in history.
The electronic components of the power part adopted a lot of Rubycons. -
2.66 has some added features over 2.5. The most important upgrade is just that the encoding algorithm has been tweaked so it should be able to provide better quality, but personally I don't really see any difference. 2.66 does have some nice new filters though. Also it has a built in 3:2 pulldown feature so you no longer have to run your ntscfilm encoded material through pulldown.exe afterwards, but that only takes about 5 secs anyway.
Also I believe the audio encoding has been enhanced, this was done even in some versions between 2.5 and 2.66. But few people use CCE for audio anyways so this is kind of a non-issue.
There is a comparison chart on cinema craft's homepage if you want the technical specs for each package. Personally I have just stuck with 2.5 because it has never failed me yet.
