I bought it yesterday, and I'm stoked! I've just started to learn how to make SVCDs today, and in my inexperience I've still got it to play everything I've made. On both CDR and CDRW. Just made a SVCD with a main title page, 3 chapters and 3 title pages. Works perfectly, all sound & video in sync, FF/RW working perfectly. 8 hours ago I knew almost nothing about making SVCDs or even VCDs, now I'm making them, and they're all working, despite me barely understanding what I'm doing!

Here's some of the Akai's features:

Multi zone DVD, multi angle, multi language, subtitles, and PBC functions.

Plays DVD, SVCD, VCD, mp3, CVD, DVCD, HDVD, CDR/CDRW, Audio CD/CDR/CDRW

Media: el cheapo "Lazer" brand CDR and CDRW both green and silver, Ricoh CDR/CDRW, Media Excel CDR

DTS coaxial and optical digital audio outs
    S-video and normal video out
Dolby digital 5.1 ch out with built in decoder/decoder bypass

Karaoke mic inputs & echo for Japanese businessman who drop in...

Now all I have to do is learn the basic and finer arts of SVCD making, so I know what I'm doing. Then I'll be able to find out its limitations and put it to the test, especially with regards to non compliant stuff like XVCD, XSVCD. So far, so good!

Ok.. almost everything. Just made a miniDVD, it played the intro menu page but couldn't play the clip. Might be still my fault, wrong compression settings in TMPEGEnc or something. Also, same problem with XSVCD's. I'll try some other templates. Still stoked though, haven't made a single coaster yet of standard VCD, SVCD!

If the miniDVD menu works you should probably lower the bitrate. I hope it works!
