  1. I tried to rip a DVD to SVCD using SmartRipper, DVD2AVI and TMPGEnc (latest version). The picture I get when watching the movie on my DVD player (SMC 330) is perfect until there is motion, then it gets really jerky. Motions look totally bad. Watching the mpeg file on the computer gives a slighly better picture but still not very good. Just comparing motions I do get a lot better results converting to VCD or SeVCD. What am I doing wrong?
    - Movie 104 min NTSC
    - 2 CD-R's x 80 min
In TMPG I load the Standard SVCD Template go into setting and set the following values (accourding to http://www.vcdhelp.com/tmpgencsvcd.htm):
    Constant Bitrate: 1850
    High Quality (slow)
    and in "advanced" I select:
    Video Source: Non-Interlace (progressive)
    Source aspection: 1:1 VGA
Video Arrange Method: Full Screen (keep aspect ratio)
I leave everything else untouched. I'm a newbie to this and really don't understand some of the settings like would I even use Non-Interlace (progressive) on a standard US NTSC movie? Can someone help me? What am I doing wrong?

  2. One more think. The DVD is widescreen. Can the setting 1:1 VGA for source aspect ratio be responsible for the problems I get?

  3. You can try to increase the bitrate to 2350 and use VBR (auto or 2-pass if you have the time) in TMPGEnc.

  4. And source aspect 16:9 or 4:3

  5. I just set source aspect to 16:9 and it already looks better. What about the interlace or non-interlace settings. What do I use? Does it matter?

  6. It's an interlacing problem - which is actually why converting to VCD or Sefy's template eliminated it - both convert the video to 352x240 which effectively eliminates interlacing, but you lose quality.

Change the setting in TMPG to 'Interlaced' and see what happens. It will look jerky on the PC but should be fine on your standalone.

If that doesn't work, read up on deinterlacing. Look at the guides on this site and at http://www.doom9.org
