OK, here's the deal.
Using TMPGEnc, I am trying to convert a Divx movie ("Tombstone") to an MPEG and I am having problems setting up the screen size for when I play it on my DVD player.
According to Virtual Dub, the file is frame size 512x224, 29.970 fps meaning I load NTSC when I encode. I do that and in "Settings", under the "Video" tab, the options go away and the Size is 352 X 240 and Aspect Ratio is 4:3 525 line (NTSC). So far so good.
Now, here lies the problem. In "Settings", under the "Advanced" tab, I have Source Aspect Ratio set to 1:1. Now if I set the video arrange method to to Center(Keep Aspect Ratio), the image isn't streched and I should be satisfied but there is still the matter of that teensy 10 % overscan that nearly all TV's have. I have a feeling I should do something with Center(Custom Size).
So my question is how do I set up the Center(Custom Size) so that when I play it on my DVD player the movie will be the right size(meaning NOT stretched) and it will compensate for the overscan area by being 10% smaller in height and width.
Any hints or help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Try (just encode a small file) to 352 x 288 with the ratio 1:1 and another with 352 x 244 with the ration 4:3 and another 352 x 240 with the ratio 1:1

Sorry, it's no good. The MPEG files were streched vertically for all of them (the middle one more than the other too)! Which leads me to another question. Is the way the MPEG file looks when viewed the same as the way it will look on your DVD player?
Anyway, if there are anymore possible solutions to my problem in the first post, feel free to mention them. Thanks in advance. -

ignore the parts about low resolution for doing this. That should do it for you. If that doesnt work, download dvd2svcd, which will do everything for you (be sure to mark the output file as mpeg 1.
