Can I get a clear answer on the best way to convert type 1 DV AVI files for conversion to a DVD. I know my source material is bottom field first and that I should check the top field first box in CCE. If I encode my videos this way do I then still need to use pulldown.exe on the resulting mpv video files. I use CCE 2.5 and there is a 2gb limit on the files. Is there a good way to frameserve these files to CCE.

Use AVISynth, or VirtualDub to frameserve to CCE (check the guides section). I'm assuming the 2GB limit your referring to is due to your OS? If your using Fat32, the size limit is actually 4GB, not 2. If your still on Fat16, then your stuck at 2GB.

CCE version 2.5 doesn't have a size limit that I'm aware of (can someone verify?). You may also need to convert your Type 1 avi. I seem to recall that CCE chokes on type one DV, but I may be misremebering. Search the tools section for a converter.

For your pulldown question, assuming your video is interlaced 29.97 frames per second, then you do not need to run pulldown. If your video is 23.976 frames per second, then you will need to use pulldown.

Previously PureMotion included a freely distributable DVtype converter in their editstudio trial as a standalone executable. Now its a dll that is accessed from inside their program. If you could find the original that would work. I have it at home but not at the office or I would send to you.

A better solution is an upgrade to CCE 2.66 as it no longer bitches about type 1 or type 2 dv.avis and now reads virtuldub .vdrs When combined with virtualdubmod for mpeg2 avisynth is no longer required. Its a good thing!

The converters are freely available for Type 1 DV. Try here:

    http://www.canopus.com/US/Products/DV_Codec/pm_dvcodec.asp
    and here
    http://www.ulead.com/download/dvconverter/dv.zip

    Both are freeware.
