Interesting stuff here about prices in different areas of the world.

I want to take a second to point out that a Pioneer burner for between $150-200 is a sale/rebate thing thats pretty recent. Your normal instore price is still $300. So its not like at any time you can walk on into somewhere and get one that cheap. Only though ad watching do you find these prices. Strangely there lately seems to be someplace with a Pioneer onsale every weekend, it just shifts stores each week.

  2. I started burning DVD's back in late December, and after completing my fourth project two weeks ago, I'm really not sure I'd ever burn a VCD. I do own one - but the quality is very poor compared to DVD.

I can certainly understand monetary issues - burning isn't exactly cheap (yet) but prices are coming down, and with the right combinations of hardware and software (and the wealth of knowledge on this site) DVD burning is becoming easier.

On top of that, not many players can play a home cooked DVD, plus the entertainment industry is still fighting out the formats. I admit that eventually this will be the format of choice and people will look at VCD/SVCD like VHS, I just dont think the time is here yet. I hope this site hasnt given up on VCD/SVCD yet.

A DVD Burner and blank DVD-R/RW isn't all that expensive here in Australia. A DVD burner has benefits just like VHS to DVD, the same for VCD/SVCD to DVD-R and DVD-RW.

I am also waiting for the prices to go down further and the time of getting one. Maybe a couple of months or later.
