You need to open the divx in VirtualDub. Set your audio to 'direct stream copy'. Then select FILE | SAVE AS WAV. Name it as a .AC3 file (example: reddreagon.ac3 ).

Find AC3FIX.EXE (check the tools section. If it's not there, complain, and then try google. If you still can find it, PM me. You need it to fix the corrupted frames introduced into it when you extracted it with VirtualDub. It will stop your audio from going out of sync.

Encode your avi to M2V (video only) in TMPGenc, or whatever encoder you use. Then use the mutliplex tools in TMPGenc ( FILE | MPEG TOOLS ), or bbMPEG to multiplex the AC3 back in with your M2V video file (I think bbMPEG will multiplex AC3..never tried it..anyone? In either case, I TMPGEnc will)

    It's dos based. Just type "AC3Fix /?"

If I remember correctly, you type ac3fix and the input filename, and the output filename. you must specify the full path to both if ac3fix is not in the same directly as the AC3 file.

    example:

    ac3fix c:\temp\infile.ac3 c:\temp\outfile.ac3

Look for SpruceUp. It will let you author DVD's using AC3. The new version of Roxio CD & DVD Creator is also supposed to support AC3. I have a copy, but I haven't evaluated it yet. I just use SpruceUp (note, there is not space in the name. Search GOOGLE for it). It's simple, quick, efficient, and it gives me everything I need.
