  1. I have a Pioneer Laserdisc unit (u know those big old 12" discs) that says it can also read CDV format. I think this is some kind of early VCD format that never really picked up. I tried popping a VCD just to see if it would work but no luck, so i was wondering if there is a utility that would allow converting video to that format (CDV) ??

  2. CDV is Compact Disc with Video, something like the enhanced CD's you see out today with music and a couple of video's on it.
I know of no consumer way of recording something on a CD so it will play CDV, I have a Pioneer D704 laser disc thats a side changer with digital and have never found any way to play a VCD or even found a CDV to try out.
    sorry

CDV is essentially a 5" laserdisc (as opposed to the 12" biggies). These 5" discs have audio tracks on them, so you can pop them in your CD player and hear the single.

The video is analog on these discs, just like laserdiscs, so a) you'll spend the rest of your life locating a burner for these discs; b) more good luck to you if you find authoring software!; c) the format is totally incompatible with digital video (VCD/SVCD/DVD) although there are combo-players available (they use different lasers for each kind of disc I believe).

I have one, REM "Get up" but I can't find it. Last time I saw it in my apartment was about 2 months ago. There is a store in the Washington DC area called Sound Images by High Tech, 7700 Old Georgetown Road, Bethesda, Maryland (301/718-2824) that had a handful of the 5-inchers last winter. They may still have some if you're really curious. I'm not affiliated with them in any way, but I was a regular customer when I worked in Bethesda last year.

As a side note, this store also sold 5" Dolby Digital audio CD's from Japan. I'd never heard of it before and never bought one, as I was afraid to experiment with that!
