Why won't my dvd rom reader copy files past 2x read speed?

I bought this dvd rom 16x samsung sd-616q (came in a Cendyne package) and it won't read past 2x, meaning the highest xfer rate is 1900kb/sec. I'm trying to read/copy files off of a data dvd-r disc I made with my pioneer dvr-104 burner. I simply can't get near 16x read.

I downloaded the new adaptec aspi layer 4.7.1.2, installed and it still can't reach anything near 21.6mb max xfer rate.
Theoretically I should be able to dump a dvdrom single layer onto my hdd in less than 5 minutes. Currently it takes 30min or more to copy one disc to hdd, thats too long. I also applied the latest firmware F404, but this did not help.

What can I do to try and make my dvdrom reader pass the 2x barrier? please help...please tell me how I can rip dvds faster than 2x??? how to get near 16x? (I've formatted and re-sintalled winXP pro, applied aspi layer, dvd rom sits on its own ide channel, running latest version of everything and firmware, played with dma settings)

I've tried with both original dvd movies and data dvds that I've burnt and I simply can't maintain a read rate better than 2000kb/sec


I went to best buy and spoke to service and here is what they told me..."the dvdrom reader can not do 16x because 16x applies only to playback, 16x can not be done on digital audio extraction", from what I understood, he was saying that it can play at 16x which baffles me, who plays a disc at 16x?? but it simply can not copy files off a disc at 16x. Then why is it on a regular cd I copy files off it past 12x?

any input on this would be greatful. I had read a thread on here about one person who was able to rip dvds at near 16x with his liteone 16x dvd rom reader. He says a single layer disc can be ripped in under 5min. How do I accomplish this?


Thinking it was model or brand specific, I returned the samsung and I bought a 16x liteon dvd rom reader model 165h and sadly this will not maintain a sustained read rate past 2x either. It takes about 45min to copy a disc to hdd. Liteon has no support on their website since they are OEM only, so I had to call the distrubutor and the techincian said, it does not support 16x. So why sell something labeled 16x when it wont go past 2x?

I use dvd dycrpyter 3.1.4 to read a non copyrighted data disc, it starts at 1.3 then 2.x and may climb up to 4.x but then slams back to 0.0x and climbs again slowly. The speeds greatly vary but for sure it can not sustain a read rate past 2x. It averages about 2x in the end, if I could make it maintain an avg rate of 8000kb/sec that would be awesome.

With this brand new drive I compared it to an older model dvd rom reader and both in the end copy the disc at about 45min. So thre really is no difference int he speed it can copy files which is very dissapointing.

Some ppl on the net claim to be able to copy 4 gigs with their liteon dvd rom reader in less than 5 min. How do I accomplish this?? what is it thats limiting my drive? I've personally seen some pple who can rip a disc at 8x.

Can anyone please help? I've exhausted all my efforts, and tech support both retail and thru my distributor can't seem to figure it out.

from what i know, a lot of the newer DVD-ROM drives are limited to 2x for digital data extractions, meaning you can't rip them at higher than 2x and there's no way around them...but i thought that this didn't apply to Lite-on drives, but maybe i'm wrong...and i need a new DVD-ROM drive now and i was looking at the Lite-on 166S or the Artec 16x...can anyone confirm whether these two drives will let you rip at more than 2x?

i can't remember if you said it in your post or not, but did you update the firmware for the Lite-on drive? there was a thread in this forum a while back talking about the LTD-166S saying that they couldn't rip faster than 2x until they updated the firmware...check back a page or two and you can probably find that thread

i'm gonna need more to go....after reading that long thread it seems the model 166S is the one to have, so I'm supposed to believe that the 163 and 165h are crippled or limited? i dont buy it.

witht he 165h which I returned to the store cuz it took 45 min to copy 4 gigs of files off of an UNCOPYrighted data disc.

it had latest firmware on it, it did not need flashing.

my dvdrom only rips at 2x now after a format. I cannot get it back to 4/5x. I has to be a software issue

I have the liteon 163d and am able to rip upto 8x at the moment (only tried 3 discs so far). So i would say that the 166 would be the same or even better.Sure beats the hell out of ripping at 2x with my pioneer 104.......Spaceman

I have Cendyne internal 16x IDE DVD-ROM (Model # CDICD00085).
This doesn't rip beyond 2.1 speed.

Is there any way to make it rip at higher speeds?

Any help is appreciated.
