I can't help you with your problem but I would like to tell you not to be so hard on yourself.

Wrong forum to post this question in.
so your DVD-RW will not playback in your computer based recorder AFTER it has been burned. -
If I understand you correctly you want to burn a movie onto DVD-R on your PC, and then play it in your standalone DVD player.
Firstly the movie needs to be DVD compatible mpeg2 format. If it is not already you need to convert it. See the how to convert section for guides on doing this, I would reccomend using TMPGEnc.
Once you have your compatible mpeg2 file it then needs to be authored before it can be burned to DVD. See the how to author section for guides. There are many authoring applications, one free one is ifoedit, I use DVD workshop to create an ISO disc image.
Once you have authored you will either have an ISO disc image or video_ts and audio_ts directorys which you can then burn to DVD. Many of the authoring packages also have the option of burning, however, I have not had much success doing it this way. So once I have my ISO disc image I burn it using Nero.
This is in the wrong forum, so I am moving it to DVD authoring -
After re-reading your post, I think I misunderstood what you are trying to do.
Are you just trying to burn a movie onto DVD-R as data, then play it back on your PC ?
Moving again to DVD writers -
If you have lots of MPG movies on ur harddrive, buy a
sampo 612(N), they play raw data files on dvd-r's,no
need to convert of author, but wont play avi's as they
are compressed..only 69$ now -
thanks fellas for the positive feed back .i thinkima try the sampo612 that might be the easiest way for me .and yes im trying to play back movies in my personal dvd player
