I've been using toolame in tmpgenc as the external audio encoder and noticed that it creates a temp wav file before encoding in mp2. Does this mean I can safely forego extracting the wav files with vdub (as per the guides here)?

I would only extract the wave file if and only if I get a audio synch problem. TooLame is arguably the best freeeware audio encoder around, so there is no need to use Virtual Dub to extract audio if you do not need to.
