Hey, I recently got some new gear (AIW Radeon 8500DV and 4x burner). My friend is going to pay me to tranfer some vhs to dvd. I am not sure as to what settings I should capture with to give best results.
What I was thinking was capturing directly to MPEG-2, at 352x480 w/ a bitrate of about 4mb. Since I know that garbage-in/garbage-out is the deal, I figured going for 720x480 with a higher bitrate would be a waste. Do you guys have any other ideas for the settings? I can't go too shockingly high (to fill the disc for example) or I get frames dropping that become noticable.

When I capture, I capture at the highest setting I can. Then encode at whatever setting my final product will be. It cuts down on quality loss, after all, it will be for a friend.

Plus using the highest setting for the capture, you can go back and change your encoding to be better or worse. Picking the best capture settings gives you the most options in the long run (as long as you have the drive space to spare). Wether you use them or not is another question?
