    There are two options.

If you want to make subtitles permanent, I would recomment using VirtualDUB and the Subtitler "filter". You will have to write your subtitles in SubStation Alpha script (ASCII file with sequence numbers, start and end times and ASCII data). You will need to rip your DVD into AVI and run it through VirtualDUB and after that re-encode it. (Too much for nothing, perhaps)

If you want to do it the "proper" way, then you could use IFOEdit. It may be possible to achieve this without ripping the VOB files and reconver them, however the straightforward way is this. You select the option to author a new DVD, select mpeg video and mpeg audio streams and also a subtitle script file. There are lot's of IFOEdit guides that may help you get the exact details.

The proper way is using a high-end authoring system (like Scenarist) that allows you to either import subtitles (in bitmap form) using a script, or directly type them over the appropriate scenes. It's not easy and it's very slow to do.

In any case, adding subtitles to a movie, especially if you don't have the timing script, can take ages (well, it usually takes a full working day).
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

  3. Hi,

By accident i came across this port, and i was wondering....
Is there a way to extract the english subs to some sort of text-editable-format, translate it an re-import it as a new subtitle stream in some program.

  4. I wondered this myself, and could never find an answer. It's funny how IFOedit can author a DVD with subs.. but no program can actually create a suitable stream for it. =P

  5. 1) You can rip the subtitles with either VOBSUB or SUBRIP, then use them as your source.

    2) If you have a timed script file (eg. anime fansub) you can convert that to substation alpha format, then use MaestroSBT to generate the BMP files.

    3) You can use SubStation Alpha to create your own (original) subtitles.
