  1. Hi all,

I am trying to shrink down some Star Trek TNG episodes so that 4 can fit onto one DVD-R. I am using TMPGEnc, but I keep getting this real annoying combing effect, best as I can describe. It only happens when something moves fast, like someone waving a hand and or grabbing something, it's really quite bad. At the leading edge of the movement it looks like some one has smeared the image with a comb.

I am re-encoding at 3000 kb/s so I think my bitrate is fine. On slow or still moving scenes it looks great. Here are the rest of my TMPGEnc settings:

    -------- PAGE 1 ----------------
    Size: 720x480
    Aspect Ratio: 4:3
Frame Rate: 23.976 fps (internally 29.97)
Rate Control Mode: Auto VBR at 300

Profile &Level: Main Profile & Mainlevel
    Vid Format: NTSC
Encode Mode: 3:2 pullodwn when playback
    YUV format: 4:2:0
    DC component precision: 8 bits
Motion seach precision: High quality (slow)

    -------- PAGE 2 ----------------
    Video Source Type: Non-interlaced (progressive)
    Bottom field first (Field B)
    4:3 525 line (NTSC)

    nothing else is checked...

The reason I have it at 4:3 and 720x480 is because that matches the original. Any help would be hugely appreciated thanks.

It is called Interlacing. First, try to use De-Interlacing.

That's one of the first things I tried:

    Selected: Deinterlace (None)

Also on page2 changed: Video source type to 'interlaced'

Still looks like crap, very comby. Starting to get really worried here. I can't find any guides on this and am running out of ideas. I've done about 12 encodes with various settings over the last 3 days to no avail.... help
