Ive backed up 3 titles with the demo and they have all played perfectly, although one had a problem going back to the main menu from the extras. I consider that trivial.
I've done Chasing Amy, Mallrats and Formula 51 with the demo and it's been painless. I delete out all languages except English and all subtitles except English and other than that, dont change anything.
I rip the files with DVD Decryptor in file mode, point InstantCopy to that dir, choose DVDR as the output, drop in a blank disk and come back in a few hours to get the finished product.
I just got an ICQ from a friend of mine who backed up one of the Soprano's DVDs and said that it looked horrible. I guess I can see that. Lots of video to try to compress down.
All in all, I'm impressed. I'll probably buy it when it becomes available in the US. I had planned to buy DVD2One also but until I see some level of support out of the DVD2One team, they aren't getting my money.

I put up a simple guide for newbies like me. Nothing at all like mb1's excellent german guide but just a screenshot gallery galore.

Trying to use Instant Copy (IC) to "archive" a cartoon series dvd.
1) Used DvdDecrypt to rip all the contents using FILE mode into a VIDEO_TS folder.
2) Tried using IC to copy the DVD9 files onto a DVD-R however IC is having problems (unknown why) with one of my VTS files (#09 and others to #19) right after the hitting START.
Fortunately these VTS's are files that I can do without so I would like to use IFOEDIT to remove the links to vts's #9-19 so that IC will not bother with attempting to copy and I can work around the error these files are causing. After selecting an episode from the main menus.... Files 09-19 are played (one specific to each of the 11 eps) before each episode begins..
Since this is a Cartoon DVD...there are 11 eps (VTS 24-34) on the disc. Are there any known issues with IC and this many PGCs?
I have looked at the guides on dvdrhelp and doom9 but I have not been able to find any guides that clearly (no offense to authors) explain how to remove LINKs to unecessary files and re-write the IFO. If I was blind please re-direct me.
If there is someone with patience... could you answer the following?
1) Is what I am trying to attempt possible?
2) Am I a newbie? Answer: "YES" - But is my polite request getting me a little credit?
3) Which IFO file will I be modifiying?? VTS_TS.IFO? or the VTS files specific to the ones I want to exclude...? ie VTS_09 - 19?
4) Once in Ifoedit... and if I am editing VTS_TS.IFO.....Where do I go to edit? and how?
5) Saw the following sections after opening VTS-TS.ifo... am I supposed to go into one of the following to edit???
VMGM_MAT-Video Manager Ino Management table?
VMG-PTT_SRPT-Video Maanger Title Play Map Table?
VMG_PGCI_UT-Video Manager Menu PGCI Unit table?
VMG_PTL_Mait-Parental Managemnt Info Table?
VMG-VTS-ATRT- Video Title Set Attribute Table?
VMG-TXTDT_MG-Text data manager info?
VMG_c_ADT VMGM Cell Address Table Info?
VMG_VOBU_ADMAP-Vdieo Manager Menu VOBU Address map
Thank you so very much. -
I just did Jurassic Park II on a DVD-RW. Here are the list of problems I had:
No volume name on disk
No Audio_TS folder
Disk not full (about 3.9gigs used)
Program is not reducing all video titles, only the bigger ones.
To increase main movie quality I set it to 55% reduction and extras at 45% reduction. Main movie quality is OK but quality on extras is pretty bad.
Why cant we write straight in DVD format (Video_TS) on the HD??!?
It looks promising but this is more beta testing then using a final product... -

As someone who doesn't have a DVD drive (yet!) it's interesting to read the comments re. DVD2One and Pinnacle Instant Copy. However, I have noticed that users who don't like either programme keep singing the praises of CCE for re-encoding. As I don't use CCE and don't ever intend to use CCE, I was wondering what the quailty of these new DVD conversion tools is like compared to TMPG's DVD template or the MainConcept Encoder at DVD bitrates? I imagine that most users here would use either TMPG or Mainconcept for normal MPEG2 encoding. CCE isn't a very user friendly or easily configurable or cheap alternative and good quality at DVD bitrates isn't too difficult to achieve with any encoder these days.

You needn't have a dvd burner to test these new transcoder tools (dvd2one and Instant Copy) out you know. You mount the .iso in daemon tools and preview with PowerDVD. I don't have a burner yet either but like testing these methods out. Life would be different if stupid Dell shipped my sony burner which on ordered on October 3 of LAST YEAR but guess God didn't mean it to be.
Anyway it's best to judge yourself the quality of all encoders and transcoders. No need to start a another Holy War ..we have enough of those already. -
ic has impressed me again have just backed up matrix with everything fine, The only Querie i have or i might have missed it in earlier posts, that it does not work properly in media player or powerdvd is this due to the demo version, or due to the fact that i use ic to read and burn the dvd rather than put on my hd then burn. I have tryed re-burning the disc using record now but same results, but hay should i complain it works in my ps2 and cbyerhome fine and for the price of the program it is cheap for pinnacle software.
the dvd wars have begun

Thanks for taking the time to put together the nifty little guide, MrBass! There's no doubt it will come in handy for a lot of folks.

Hi!
I'm pretty impressed with the quality, but some things are working strange. These are my experiences. I did 2 dvd's from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and i got everything including Dutch subs. Then i tried it manually, because i didn't need the French language and French/English subs. When i checked the result, it looked pretty much the same. Episode one worked and with subs. But now i wanted to go to episode 2. When i pushed play it didn't go to the movie. It showed me the warnings that you get at the beginning of the disc. Then it goes back to the menu. When i tried episode 3 and , the same happened. I don't understand why this went wrong.
Then i tried Star Trek: TNG. When i copied it automaticly everything is on it, except the Dutch subs(and some others languages too)!!!! Toolman2k, i have the same problem as you! When i tried it manually i got a bit the same result as with Buffy. Episode one worked(but no subs) but when i tried one of the other 3 episodes, it shows me again the beginning of the disc(The choise which language you want to choose). So manually, it really sucks yet when you try this program with multi PGC's.
Does somebody knows a solution for this?
The version i'm working with is: 7.0.0.80

Sheppy124,
I used IC to burn my first movie from files on my HD. WinDVD plays the disc on my computer without a hitch, and my standalone is happy with it too. However, I do note that the IC created disc does NOT contain an AUDIO_TS folder. I'd be surprised if PowerDVD was that "picky", since computer players seem to play just about anything you throw at them, but I suppsoe it could be the case. I'm going to check into the AUDIO_TS issue on the support page. -
Has anyone seen this error. I made 2 copies and now I get this what has happened. Any help would be great.
Picture didnt work here is what it said.
An Error occured while writing track 1 at position 0. Extended information #1 device Toshiba DVD-rom SD-R5002 (E) Illegal request Cannot write medium. Incompatible format.
I was using a dvd-rw to test with I used it 2 times before and even when I switched to another dvd-r it said same thing. -

I have some problems with Instantcopy, hope someone can help me out!
I made a backup of Bad Company. I reduce the size of the titels manually and cut of the title including movie trailers. I also only keept the swedish subs and the dolby digital 5.1 sound. Then I let InstantCopy do it's job.
I ended up with 5 pdi files that I convert to an ISO image using the pdi2iso
program. I then tried to play the ISO in PowerDVD, but the movie hang in the first menu when Ichoose language. I also tried to play the ISO in Windows mediaplayer getting an error and mediaplayer close.
I then tried to backup Double Jeopardy, but this time I kept all titles, but I still reduce the size manualy and only keept swedish subs and dd 5.1 sound. This time the movie played fine both in PowerDVD and Windows mediaplayer, except for the subtitle that didn't work! I can't understand why the subtitles wont work, can some one help me here?
I guess the problem with Bad Company was that i deleted one of the titel, but that shouln't be a problem for thie program, right? But then why dosen't the first movie work poperly? -
If your stripping language tracks or subtitles you better off with Dvd2one.
My suggestion is keep everything if you use that tool because you may create navigation errors if you remove something.
Also I hope they fixed the no volume name and no audio_ts folder so I dont have to edit the output with IFOEdit. The fact that the tool cant write the output in a normal folder doesnt help and add steps to the process.
The steps I do with the tool is this:
1. Decrypt the DVD on the HD. (30 mins)
2. Make it region free, remove copyrights screens if possible. (30 mins)
3. Do the tool encoding steps. (5 hours on my p4 1.5ghz PC)
4. Convert the output to a normal folder. (30 mins)
5. Test the output. (15 mins)
6. Burn with a Audio_TS folder and a volume name.
So the total process time is in the 6 to 8 hours range. But at least you have a complete backup at the end of it. Once the tool is realible and can produce a standard DVD output, the autoburn step will be usefull. -
Excelent program !!!!
Just copied Gladiator, quality is superb, although I still ended up with sub-titles after I thought I disabled them, oh-well
Had problems getting DVD-decrpter to rip the vob_01_0 so I used Claddvd XP in no-parsing mode, ripped full movie, worked no problem.
Used reg hack to get rid of all other tracks, then burn't via instant copy to Sony DRU500a via hard disc image (pdi).
and I thought DVDcopy was good -
OK!! Just what I needed and so simple. Thanks Jamie
Here's how to reenable the OK button when in the customize disc screen and the size exceeds the maximum allowed. This should be useful for those that are getting undersized output.
Just press F5 - yup simple as that!
Note: I haven't tested this fully, I just pressed OK and InstantCopy started doing it's thing. I quit shortly after that since I didn't want oversized output.
Also, I discovered this using the demo so I guess it should work for everyone who has the latest release.
Jamie
Another thing very useful is to extract the final *.pdi files into a VIDEO_TS folder. Then you can use whichever burn program you wish. PDIxtract extracts the content of a .pdi file set to your hard disk.
http://www.freewebs.com/schlaufer/pdixtract.zip
PDIxtract: Extract files from .pdi file sets
Since the new version of DVD Decrypter is not ready by now and image mounting is not a option for everybody, I made a new tool that helps the poor FAT32 guys as well:
PDIxtract extracts all files from a given .pdi file set into the current directory. With the switch -l it just lists the directory of the .pdi file without extracting the contents.
Usage examples:
pdixtract -l blade2
-> shows the contents of blade2.pdi
pdixtract d:\lotr_see_d1
-> extract the contents of the lotr_see_d1.pdi* files on drive d:
As usual a simple command-line utlity. Source code included, compiles under linux with gcc and under windows with OpenWatcom compiler. -
For the Subtitle issue, I made some tests and here are my results:
If the sub you need is the first, then no prob it will show but if it is the 2nd, 3rd or other place in the list you won't have them. But if you take the others as well it will work.
ex: say I want the french subs but they are the Third subs on my DVD. if you check FR only it won't show, but if you check 1st, 2nd and 3rd, then they will be shown.
So what you could do is use IFOedit to remove the unwanted subs BEFORE using IC.
My backup method is pretty much the same as many others:
Rip all files onto HDD
IFOedit to get those FBI warnings etc out of my DVD
Use IC to do his job.
Use pdixtract to get it in a VIDEO_TS folder
IFOedit to get last VTS_sector just to be sure and test it with PowerDVD
create a AUDIO_TS folder
Burn it on a DVD-R
Enjoy the movie with a nice beer last point for 21 or older of course[-Neoh*-]|[-Cheers-] -
By the way for those not reading doom9 forum. If the images you get are too small, just make it bigger and do not pay attention to the warning saying it is oversized. when you are happy just press F5 to "reactivate" the OK button. Works like a charm for me
[-Neoh*-]|[-Cheers-] -
hmm i have tried 4 times to get the reg hack to work to no avail
i am trying to backup the abyss which has the normal movie and the extended 1 on 1 dvd so i obliously wanna cut out the normal 1
any ideas -
Thanks to all who provided the mirrors. I was finally able to get the program down. Now it's time to try it out.
Thanks-

Finally! The three day wait on posting was driving me nuts!
RE: The Abyss Are you sure the extra scenes are not added to the regular movie via seamless branching? (much like viewing X-men with the deleted scenes inserted)? If so, you cannot remove the normal version of the film or it won't work properly.
And thank you! to whoever posted this in the first place. I was just trying to learn how to full backups manually and having little success. IFO edit was not naming created IFOs properly for DVD2one. Now I don't have to worry about it.
One thing concerns me... I ordered from J&R, and on their site they state that they will not charge until the product is shipped. Yet they've charged my card and status still says "Not Shipped". Their store location is closed today, but I was wondering if anyone has called to verify that they actually have InstantCopy in stock? Or is this a pre-order? -
