i use "dvdcopy plus" to convert my dvd to vcd but this is my personal choice
have fun with whatever you use -
Don't use a software package (at least not at first). Rip with SmartRipper or DVD Decrypter (look under TOOLS or DOOM9 for alternatives) to rip the DVD to HDD.
Then DVD2AVI to create a D2V and WAV that you open and encode in TMPGEnc.
Now, that are GUIs that do this for you, but when things start to go wrong (and it will, sooner or, highly unlikely, later), you won't have a clue if all you know is to insert the DVD and click on "Rip!"
It pays off in the end to do it the hard way first, then (if you feel like it) pick the package that suits you.

Thanks heaps for the help - at least this gives me a starting point.

G'Day GandyMan,
Well.... being new to all this stuff any guidance will be a bonus to say the least - and thanks for your time in advance.
Ok... this is the plan. I number of mates have some good DVDs they own in which I would also like a copy of.
At the moment all I have is a CD burner and a DVD burner is in the future. In regards to what format I should burn them in, this is where I'm open to suggestions.
Hope this gives you a further idea what I'm trying to achieve here.

Go here htt://entiendo.gotnet.net and it will show you the best way to make a vcd/svcd. It will guide you in steps (because I think it's best to control the process instead of using those GUI's that do it all in one step) of using dvd decryptor/smartripper, dvd2avi and tmpgenc.

So look to see what your player supports or list it here and we will see what it does.
But here is a pge to read on DVD2SVCD http://www.doom9.org/mpg/dvd2svcd.htm
Any problem PM me and I will Help U if I can. -
It all depends on what you want to achieve. The easiest way to backup a DVD? Sure DVDx will do the work decently. Most of the times.
Do you want to learn how to do the best possible backup of any possible movie every time? Use separate, specialized programs, where you set the options to what you find best for your goal.
Take the stairs (and learn the building) or the elevator (and just get to the floor you want - if it doesn't stop between 2 floors)?

I will be using them in a Home Theater DVD Player (Omni 3300) which is only new and supports all the usual formats including DVDR which is a bonus.
I would have thought using SVCD would have been the best option ??
Cheers Pete
