avi files wont convert.... why why why

i dl a avi... and i have divx 3.11 but it wouldnt come up... so i installed the new divx 4.1.... and its still not coming up.... but it also wont convert... i no its divx 4... but what else can it be missing??????

Can you play the file in media player??? It's not clear from your post when you say "its still not coming up." Do you mean you can't play the DivX file, that TMPGenc can't load it, when you try to play you get a blank screen, etc.

What error messages do you get when you try to play the file in media player and/or load it in TMPGenc.

well i aim using tmpeg ver a... so when i load it .. it comes up with a black screen and when u convert it its just blackness... and the media player error is the one u get when i dont have a divx driver on your computer "cant find codecs for this movie" or something of that nature

You have to install the codec, that was used to compress the .avi, nothing else.

but how do i no which codec??? i thought a divx 4 codec is a divx 4 codec

You should install all the popular codec's ready for something like this, what about the SMR have you installed that ? or the AngelPortion or what ever its called.

Did you click right mouse and select properties, then it shows the type it is. Then visit your control panel > Multimedia > Device's > Video Compression Codec's to see what you have installed.

i installed a couple of more codecs... but it still dont come up... when i did properties then info i notice it said beside video "divxmpg4 v3" so does that mean anything.... and letmeinforgodsake i think i did install smr... when i dl a movie a while back... something came with it sayin that it was a "smrpatch" or something like that.... when u install it it install some kind of codec (but its not call smr) i am starting to think the worst... that the person who uploaded to my computer didnt upload the whole thing... i no sometime that will cause it to... the f up part it i forgot who did it for me

SMR is another Mpeg4

divxmpg4 v3, thats part of the package you get 1,2,3 codecs available, sometimes listed as microcrap depends who has been messing with them.

Do you have it on your system ?

Are the ones I downloaded and installed, also got the AngelPotion video codec

Most popular is DivX 311 Alpha, that gives the MPEG-4 (Low-Motion) and MPEG-4 (Fast-Motion)

Mol3000, are you sure the movie is complete? Sounds to me like you got an incomplete movie. Do a search for "DivX Fix" and hopefully you will find a program that will fix partially downloaded DivX movies. Sorru I don't have a direct link to it.
