  1. Ok, I have three questions so here goes.

    1. What setting to use for encode mode? It is a FILM movie at 23.976fps. should i use, interlace, non interlace, 3:2, etc. I want the one with the best quality and compatibility, although shouldnt they all work with all dvd players.

    2. I know how to get an uncompressed wav from the DIVX using Virtual Dub. How can I get a Dolby Digital file? Is it possible to get Dolby Digital 5.1 from a stereo file? I dont think it is so how can i get Dolby Digital 2.0, as i know this is possible.

    3. What is a good bitrate setting to use for the video? I know everybody says 2-pass, but I really do not want to waste the extra time, and I have read that it is tough to get your chapters in the right place using VBR. So what is a bitrate to get a 2:20 movie onto a DVD-R?

Yes, you would use 3:2 Pulldown for the encode mode since your framerate is 23.976fps. :P

Use a bitrate calculator to figure the bitrate out for your encode's. :P

  5. ok 3:2 pulldown on play back will have the player put it to 30fps on the fly? if that is the case then what i will be seeing on the screen will not be progressive correct? if so what is non interlace for. I will be using the DVD on a plain old analog for now but in about three months i will have a HDTV (widescreen) to go with my progressive scan dvd player. So then if it has 3:2 pulldown it will not be progressive on the HDTV? maybe I am confused on what non-interlace is used for.

Your source will be progressive, but your output will be telecined. Don't worry, your TV (both HDTV, and regular TV's) are designed to handled interlaced images. Just use the 3:2 pulldown option.

To get the 5.1 AC3 sound out of a divx, set your AUDIO menu to 'Direct Stream Copy' in VirtualDub, and select FILE | SAVE AS WAV. Name your file with a .AC3 extension (this assumes your working with 5.1 AC3 audio). Get AC3Fix from the TOOLS section (or on Google..AC3FIX.EXE). If you don't use this tool, your audio will loose sync.

The capabilites of a progressive scan dvd player allow it to use the component outputs, and a progressive scan TV, to display the original 23.976 frames per second, without the telecined material. It essentially ignores the Pulldown flags You added using the 3:2 pulldown, in the mepg during playback, meaning your display will be progressive on your HDTV.
Impossible to see the future is. The Dark Side clouds everything...
