  1. I have an .avi video that I am trying to convert to mpeg.
I cannot open the file with TMPGenc 12j or VirtualDub...
    It says its unsupported...

Do you think its the new divx codec?

This is just a guess. Can you open the AVI using media player? If not, you probably need a codec. Lots of the new AVIs need an MP47 codec, which is pretty easy to obtain and download.

  3. Yes, check media player first. The other problem could be that it was encoded at a non-standard frame rate. When I've d/loaded DivX/avi's at non-standard frame rates I've had to framerserve them to TMPGenc with AVISynth, and/or applied a modified telecine to them to get a framerate that TMPGenc can handle.

  4. The avi works perfectly on windows media player, but its when I try to open with virtualdub..

    VirtualDub Error

    Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'MP42' (Microsoft High-Speed MPEG-4 V2)

VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFN) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable.
