I have alot of mpg1/2 files that i want to edit out comercials etc. i dotn care about adding menus overlays titles etc. All i want to do is open a movie and edit out all the junk. What is the best program to do that? and what is the best format to do it in? i am able to capture in a large number of formats but typicaly cap in mpg2 480x480 8000kbs 224/44.1 sound and then either re-encode to VBR 2250 or leave it as is. here is a list of programs i have to use loaded currently.

    Adobe Premier 6.0 and 6.5
Ulead video studio version 5 or 6 (not sure.. newest)
    pinnacle studio v7 and v8.xx
    pinnacle expression v2.xx? (latest)
MGI video wave II and III
Ulead movie factory (not sure of version)

looking at getting Main Concept encoder BTW if its worth it.

plus i have a slue of other encoding/cap programs loaded DVD2svcd vdub CCE tmpg etc. i also am able to cap in DIVX but didnt think that was a good idea.. space is not a problem i have over 150 gigs free.

Im hoping that i get a number of responces tp this post so as i can take the largest number that agree on the same program. if you post please explain why you feel your choice is the best it will help me decide.
what i want to do seems easy but i seem to have trouble all the programs i try bog way down or crash from time to time.. im sure its not my computer specs im thinking its that i have to many programs loaded codecs etc. AVI cap looks the best but takes up soo much space that it bothers me and i need to redo nto mpg anyway for SVCD.

So what do you all say? Please let me know.. i litterlaly have hundreds of mpgs that i want to convert. Seinfled shows for one and i want to put a few on one CDR but half have comercials.

  2. I would look for an MPEG editor that does not re-encode after you make your cuts.....

TMPGEnc has a 'Merge and Cut' tool that works good for me.

I have seen some threads where people have mentioned I believe a Ulead product but I forget which ones. Mpeg editing is not always the best, it can be frustrating do to the way the file structure is setup. If at all possible capture to a lossless format like Huffyuv and then edit and then encode. If you already have them in MPEG format though, then just use an editor that does not re-encode.....TMPGEnc is the only one I know that does not.

  3. Just beware that after cutting using TMPGEnc, you may run into lip sync and/or no audio problems.

  4. Yes that is possible, but I have found that if you cut the mpeg2 on a keyframe it usually results in no synch problems.....

the problem with that though is since TMPGenc does not provide a way to tell keyframes(that I am aware of) you have to find the key frame in Virtualdub(the MPEG mod one) and then manually find that frame in TMPGenc and cut there....that is what worked sometimes for me. I havnt studied it enough to know though if that is really what is happening, though I suspect it is.

I have never run into a no audio problem before though....maybe I am just lucky

Thanks for the input. however tmpg is not ecactly good at removing multiple segments of a mpg. What im trying to do is remove all the 2min comercials out of a tv recording. tmpg will let me cut but not like i needto do it..

Does anyone else do what im trying to do?

  6. New Ulead VideoStudo might look good. I was only reading info from their website and they added exactly that kind of function.
