  1. ok this is not good!

I restarted and remounted the forty-two-v1-5Updater.dmg.bz2 item ... this leaves a item on the desktop named forty-two-v1-5Updater. Double click and then click on the forty-two app icon.

application starts fine. Load the StarWars II disc and it says pre-scan for less than one minute then trys to dismount the disc icon then crashes. over and over!! After it crashes it fu-cks with my computer also as it wont let me shut down from the keyboard and the cursor is acting strange.....

    not good!

    what am i doing wrong?

  2. OK,

after crashing several times on the Star Wars II (clones) disc i tried a different disc. Well, Jurasic park seems to work better (so far!)

The problem is Kai, as you know from my email i really wanted to be able to make a toast acceptable VCD from Star Wars II ..... V1 wouldn't do it so i was sooo hoping that v1.5 would ;-(

I'm having no troubles with Episode II. I installed 1.5, inserted the DVD, fired up 1.5, dragged the DVD, it prescans for a bit, finishes, I selected default VCD settings, hit start, off it goes, plays the test clip, starts the real deal, etc...

BernieR, I'd suggest some routine maintenance, like repairing permissions, starting up in single user mode and running fsck -y, etc...

Did you do the full install of 1.5 or the upgrade? Did you recently upgrade to Mac OS X 10.2.4?

  4. Finally got this program installed, but everytime I attempt to convert a DVD It doesn't seem to detect an .ac3 stream. Even with discs with multiple .ac3 streams. Am I doing something wrong?

did you run the build application support application, as specified on the disk image and the readme?

if so, please post/email a screenshot of the contents of /Library/Application Support/forty-two folder.

    Thanks,

    The Font Folder contained:

    cp1250-a.raw
    cp1250-b.raw
    font.desc
    iso-8859-1-a.raw
    iso-8859-1-b.raw

    osd-mplayer-b.raw
    runme

That all looks good. Please make sure *NO OTHER APPS* are controlling the DVD drive, with the exception of the Finder. No DVD Player, no media players, not 0Sex and friends, no Toast, no Disk Copy or utilities.

In System Prefs, my system is either set to *ignore* DVDs or to launch forty-two.

Quit any apps that could cause contention/arbitration problems and try again. A logout/re-login is good too (if not a reboot) because at this point the unix tools that forty-two controls may not be able to access the drive. Prescanning normally should only take at most 10-15 secs if your system is really busy.

We have never, ever seen or even heard of this issue before.

    Thanks,

  10. Okay, I did a little experimentation after I manually selected the title and chose Title 2 it seemed to work but... It went to encode and it just sat there with 0 frames encoded and 0 hours and 0 minute left to encode. Maybe I should be patient but it didn't seem to be doing anything.

I should clarify something here from the previous posts... the prescan goes fine, the precaching works fine, It seems to detect widescreen video fine, but once it goes to detect the audio stream it stops and tells me there is no .ac3 stream detected for the language I selected (English) and I should try encoding to divx.

The disc has two english .ac3 streams 5.1 and 2.0

Ok, first off...did you use the audio browser to select and *prelisten* to the audio you are trying to encode?

You can access this advanced mode by clicking the "More" button in the GUI.

This is sort of a "flow of operation bug" we thought we worked out with the new docs. If the basic "click and run" options don't work for you (sometimes the won't; dvds tend to lie) then you should try again, picking the audio channel you want.

We know forty-two inside and out. Use the audio browser; is track 128 listed as an option for English? Pick the first availble audio id (aid) that matches your language, and press the listen icon to be sure its what you want.

The click start. let us all know if this solves your issue.

  12. Woooow thanks for the nice work.
Didn't have time to check it out in real life...but looks great.

One little thing: as it doesn't keep chapters how will I be able to add them if the final output is a DVD-disk image. I would like to have the choice between a final output as .mp2 and ac3 so that I could add chapters as well as a DVD-disk image.

Please users support this app, it is getting better and better

  13. As i said above SWII would not work for me but Jurasic park did. Going from DVD>SVCD started at 64 hours! -- 37 hours left to go.... I am using 10.2.3 and G4 450mhz

Still dont know why SWII did not work.

    Kai,

is the issue with VCD being split into 3 files (two of which toast will not accept) fixed in this release? I really will be bummed to have the computer work for 64 hours to convert a dvd to find that it still doesnt work.

  15. I have a weird cosmetic problem with 1.5. It's working ok, except the progress bar is already at 100% and it says it has -7 hours 4 minutes left and the minutes keep going up, like it started out at zero and is steadily subtracting more minutes as it goes along. I'm doing a dvd->dvd transcode by the way.

  16. Has anybody tried transcoding episodes of of the miniseries "Band of Brothers" or "From the Earth to the Moon"? I believe I've done everything right (bsd installed...etc) It appears to work, says "so long and thanks for all the fish" but the output biles and mpeg don't have the end of the episode. Also, in 1.0.2 there is no final AC3 file (there is one with the test clip), and in 1.5 I have sort of the same problem as above with the whole episode not being encoded, the episode is in sync, but does not include the ending. Any thoughts anyone? By the way I have contributed...have you? Get out your paypal wallet, cause I want them to want to fix this.

    Thanks Kai and Bilestyle.

    Simple Answer:

"DVDs Lie" And dvd authors are sloppy, and/or are doing things to inconvience you.

Play whatever *title* you were trying to transcode in *vlc*...does that *title* contain the whole thing, or did the dvd authors do something clever like put the last 20mins of that episode or whatever in another title?

    eh?

Personally, I think you are *all* a little crazy with this 1 DVD-r madness Its a perfect case of "diminishing returns" if ever there was one

In fact, i'm thinking of getting one of these dvd-r things, and for my money and time (which is precious to me) the DVD X Copy route (with out the blantent "Screw You MPAA" Menus Tweaking stuff...that goes waaay beyond fair use into ripping off Blockbuster) seems to me the better way.

DVD-rs are like what, $2 per now, and less in bulk. DVDs $20. I'm used to mulitle disks anyway, so yeah, screw this 30+ hours crap.

I'm making a mode (for me since 4/5 folks think its 'stupid' or 'misses the point'...HA!) that automatically does a title as chapters, figures out the dvd-r break, makes an automatic "Insert Disk 2" chapter and runs with it.

Mr. Kai isn't rich and doesn't want his precious tibook up in smoke over a $2 price differential

Whole process *might* take an hour, and look *perfect*. Hell, since svcds are 2 disks anyway and i'm personally used to, and OK with this, this will be a massive "upgrade" (to me).

You all are, of course, welcome to use this too if you'd like

  18. With "Band of Brothers" I ripped each episode using OSeX straight into .M2V and .AC3 files. They loaded into DVD Studio Pro with no problem. If you have those tools, try that technique.

  22. Hi Kai,

Thanks for this great program! I'm still in the midst of trying out the latest version - will let you know how it goes. But I for one, would LOVE to be able to burn a DVD to 2 DVD-Rs automatically - that way you get to keep both the video quality AND your computer time! I hope you received the paypal donation I sent a week or two ago. And I really, really hope that others will donate too. This is such a GREAT program - it would be a shame to have it disappear.

    Thanks!

  23. Ok,

Got forty 1.5 and Did an episode of the X Files Season 1 to SVCD. I set the VBR to 3 and let it go all day. When I cam home from work, I had to bin/cue files that burned in missing media burner. the sync was off big time and they were 2 files of 69mb each. Is that something wrong or is it supposed to do that, the size thing. any reply would help.

    thanks

Dude...what software do you have that will allow you to do this? The only Mac Stuff *I* know about that does this is like $1K...so for real?

If you have that kind of money to afford that, what are you using forty-two for?

No *good* way to answer THAT one, eh bub?

  26. 42 seems to work great... time remaining wasn't at all accurate.. said 22 hours left and finished the .iso image in less than 3 (altogether I'm not sure though, but for sure overnight), from that point on.. checked the .mpg file in vlc and it looks great, no sync issues.

Tried to burn the .iso image with Disk Copy (recalling Kai said you could in an earlier posting... and got this error...

"xxxx.iso" failed to burn due to error -2147352480. A target device error error occurred (-2147352480). 03/73/03

... along with an ejected DVD. When I insert the DVD, OSX dvd player opens trying to play the movie... but there is obviously nothing there.

    Any ideas?

Kai, are you talking about making a feature in 42 that will do *like* DVDXCopy? I'd love that feature as well! keep the entire disk and just put the two discs on 1 flipper disc (I just ordered 25 for $60 shipped from meritline.com)

  28. Sorry Kai I think you misunderstood my words (I don't know english very well)...I didn't say that your application is crap !
I am using it and it is working very well and that's why I donated 20 bucks for it ! I am just trying to help you improve it

I would like the ability to choose the output format:
    - DVD-disc image
    or
    - mp2 and ac3

So I will be able to modify the mp2. For instance, I have heard that the next version of Sizzle will probably support chapters...
That's why I would prefer to build my DVD-disc image with Sizzle instead of Forty-Two (no offense again....)

You see what I mean ?

  29. Man I am just burnt on this program, I keep staring at the screen with 0 frames encoded, 0 hours, and 0 minutes left. Im just going to go out and buy a dvd burner for my PC. Jesus $200.00 is at least worth my sanity and peace of mind. Keep up the good work Kai, let me know when you offer the program for sale. Then at least I will truly have something to complain about. $200.00 will set me back but it wont bankrupt me.

Program that wont work properly = $00.00
Freeware for the PC that will = $00.00
DVD Burner for PC = $200.00

    Keeping your sanity.... = Priceless

There are some things money cant buy, for everything else...

  30. You know, I haven't been yelled at in a while, so I figured I would post something I recently got 2 sony 500as for work, which have almost all PCs. I got dvd2one, used it, and it worked well, as expected. Now before that, I used 42 to reencode Jay and Silent Bob Strike back, and it too worked well, as expected. 2 dvd backups utilities, 2 very different goals. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back was done for a friend. He wanted the movie, didn't care about menus, etc etc... just the movie. Fine, for a dvd copy, a friend can wait a day, and so can I. For DVD2one, running to blockbuster, renting 9 dvds that I want but don't feel like spending 200 bucks to get, and ripping them in a day... see my point here? It kinda just finally hit me about what Kai and Bile and Co. are trying to offer the community. This is a way to backup you MOVIES people. You want everything intact, menus, chapters, speed of encoding... go find a pc... or christ, buy a firewire enclosure and stick yer drive in it and take it to someone's house who has a pc and do yer stuff there. Or if its really important to have an intact backup, extract the stuff from the dvd image with OSEx, and reauthor it putting in chapters, etc etc. Most of the people out there complaining say they have DVDSP or something close to it. Obviously unless you have 900 bucks layin around, yer pirating stuff anyways. I myself enjoy the speed of DVD2one when I need it. Sure its wrong, but if you make that choice and then choose to use software NOT DIRECTED at pirating, which has been CLEARLY stated, yer an idiot. You want something that transcodes fast? Convince the author of DVD2one to write something for the mac. Hopefully someone will (or will figure out a way to make DVD2one work in VPC). I also love how even though some of us are able to use 42 correctly (which means the software works when used correctly) most trash it when something doesn't work. Maybe Kai should put a "System recommendations" clause in the docs or something. Or even a "Don't attempt to use this if your OS is already jacked" clause. Who knows... What I do know is that if I can do it properly on a laptop.. a LAPTOP people, in a day, and have what the program promised, I see nothing wrong with the software. (Of course there isn't much my powerbook can't do). The fact that it won't do what YOU want it to do, doesn't mean it doesn't work. You know the pirating programs out there.. use those instead. OK I think I'm done...
