I have been going round and round on certain DVDROM drives that will only rip at 2X. Specifically I am dealing with a 16X IOMAGIC/Digital-Research drive that goes for $39.95-$69.95 US. It is the same drive, just different brand names. Below is the final responce from tech support:

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting Technical Support. PLEASE INCLUDE ALL PREVIOUS E.MAIL, since we do not save old e.mail. Also, send NO ATTACHMENTS, as the will NOT be opened, due to the possibility of a virus. (this is company policy)
Also, the DRT website does contain drivers and manuals for most DRT products. If they are not listed under Products, check under Support, for old DRT devices.

SORRY FOR THE DELAYED RESPONSE, OUR SERVER WAS NOT TRANSFERRING THE EMAIL.

It is, of course, illeagal to "backup DVD movies".

    Sorry for the inconvenience.
    Have a great day! ":+)

This final responce took over 6 weeks of badgering and painfully slow JAVA chats. In fact the support website wouldn't resolve it's DNS for a week at one point.

The bad part is I can't take the dam thing back, so I'm stuck with a $50 slowpoke. Not that it makes a real difference if I can rip in 10 minutes instead of 30, but it would be nice on occasion.

If anyone wan't to point out to "John" that he is in error, please feel free to do so. Personally, I would BOYCOTT IOMagic and Digital-Research name brands. As evidenced they have little or no support, and deceptive advertising.

  3. I knew that my Pioneer DVR-105 would be painfully slow at Ripping so I bought an OEM Pioneer DVD-119. Rips Layer-9 stuff >5x and Layer-5 stuff > 10x

I am very happy with it and both my pioneers are behaving well on Secondary IDE together.

  4. My $19 Arctec DVD-ROM that I got at Staples rips DVD-9 at 7x-8x and DVD-5 even faster

I heard the LiteOn LTD-166 drives can rip at 10x
