I am trying to encode MPEG-2 using TMPEG, however it tells me that as I don't have dvd software I cannot encode it - I have downloaded Power-DVD and it still doesn't work. Nero takes far too long to encode - can anyone point out where i'm going wrong because I really want to encode to MPEG-2!

I use TMPGEnc all the time and have never had this problem
You can encode to mpeg2 for SVCD so you don't need dedicated DVD software.
Which version of TMPGEnc do you have?

Nero can encode - it started doing it last night but took ages.
I have Tmpeg 2.5 (I think, my apologies i'm not at home at the mo....), and when I press start, the first frame comes up and then just brings up the error message advising it can't do it. -

I just says "file"whatever" could not be created" - I haven't got a dvd-rom drive- could that be the problem?
I have got registred 2.5 Plus -
The first message tmpgenc gives you is that you can't *play* mpeg2 files without dvd software. You can still encode. Check the box to not see this again and you won't. Next, if you are registered it shouldn't give you any problems with encoding to mpeg2 unless it's having some problems writing or encoding. It sounds like TMPGenc doesn't like the filename you gave it - try a different file, different drive, different folder, etc (and of course make sure you've selected a letter for one of your hard drives...).
And yes, Nero encodes but it is a convenience feature and the quality isn't comparable to TMPGenc from what I've heard (and you wouldn't expect it to be). -
Just to get a few things straight:
1) Nero comes with a free mpeg-1 encoder that sucks
2) You can buy an mpeg-2 plug-in for Nero from Nero (I have no idea what the quality of that one is like).
3) A registered version of TMPGEnc has no problems creating mpeg-1 or mpeg-2 files.
The error message that noelrock is getting sounds like a bad filename or full drive or bad location, etc.
Unable to create file is not the same as can't encode file. -
I have sorted it now, for some reason it just wouldn't save to the folder I wanted it to!
Thanks for everyone's help though, I appreicate it.
