Probably been done before but how about something like this.

How do you backup your dvds?
    Encode to divx/xvid
    Encode to h264
Rip to uncompressed ISO/Folder on hard drive
    Rip to Single Layer DVD
    Rip to Dual Layer DVD
    A combination of these
    None - I don't back up
    Other?

I checked out previous threads about dvd backups and they were mainly about dvd-dvd copying so this is with more options due to better encoding codecs and bigger hdd and media players,i might post it next week with a few additions.

Or how about *WHY* you backup your DVDs/Blu-Rays?

    1) Trailers, adverts.
    2) PUOs.
    3) I hate menus! Gimme the movie!
    4) More than one viewing location. I don't want to hunt for/retrieve a disc.
    5) All of the above.
    6) I'm a compulsive hoarder, I gotta copy everything.
    7) NOYB.

    [EDIT] Oh, and congratulations.

    8) My kids love destorying discs!

I've got two boys ages 4 and 8 and both of them can render a disc unplayable in no time. Backups have saved me lots. I've re-burned Disneys's Cars so many times that I now just leave it as an iso on my hard drive in anticipation of my youngest destroying his disc once again. He loves that movie.

How about a poll about favorite "old" movies - Mid 60's and back. I'm always looking for suggestions. I've been into 50's Randolph Scott lately. They are all mindless, but fun to just watch and unwind. I like the Hammer Horror series with Peter Cushing. Great production values and acting. I like to talk movies and would like hear what others recommend.

how about a poll as to whether or not people think both the saints and the colts will go undefeated and set up a 18-0 vs 18-0 super bowl for the ages?

for the record, even though the colts have a history of taking their foot off the gas after they have wrapped up home field advantage, part of me thinks that they won't be so willing to do so this season seeing and miss their opportunity to join the saints in making history.

@deadrats - I think that is a little too specific for a forum of this type. Why don't you post it in Off Topic?

I'm not a fan of the off-topic polls on the front page, formerly overly obstrusive at the top, fortunately now moved down to the lower right. I don't believe they belong in this forum, at least not on the index page.

How many people on this site make their primary living in the video business? How many are hobbyists?

I used to go to ITVA meetings, International Television and Video Association, when I lived in Las Vegas 10 plus years ago and found that very few people were making a living in video. Number one occupation was shooting weddings. Maybe that was because it was Vegas. Has anything changed? How many people on this site make a living filming, editing, duplicating, marketing, etc. video vs personal use/hobby video?

Tell me about it! I have four boys; 15, 7, 4 and 3. They all are out against me. They think it's cool to ruin a disc.

There have been a couple of recent posts on the subject of computer monitors (one was mine), and it gave me an idea for a poll. There hasn't been one on monitors for a couple of years.

What do you use as your primary computer monitor?

    1. LCD 16:9
    2. LCD 16:10
    2. LCD 4:3
    3. CRT 4:3
    4. Plasma HDTV 16:9
    5: Other

...or it could be based on maximum resolution, or on screen size again.

    How about:

Do you own an electronic device with a touch screen?

They are becoming so prevalent now I'm sure the response would be high. With most cell phones going that way and mp3 players close behind that has got to be a growing market now. I don't have a portable with a touch screen yet but I'm sure my next upgrade will be (whenever that is however).

    How about:

Which do you make more - avchd discs/folders, burnt bluray discs, or mkv files?

A sub heading choice would be none of the above - not in high def market yet

Granted i know you can use mkv for standard def video but these days it seems mkv is mainly used for high def video.
