  1. Hi,
Just wandering if some one could explain to me why I can view a NTSC SVCD perfectly on my PAL TV with a Toshiba SD210E, but if I try a NTSC DVD all I get is black and white.
It would seem logic to me that if I can see one correctly I should also be able to see the other.
    Any ideas?

I agree with you that it really sounds weird.

Go into the settings on your DVD player and see if it has output settings for the TV system type (ie: PAL/NTSC.) It is probably set to auto. If it is set to auto, try forcing it to manual and selecting PAL. That "may" help.

It might have something to do with region codes, which DVDs have and VCDs/SVCDs do not. You might try looking for a region code hack at: www.dvdrhelp/dvdhacks if the above doesn't work.

  3. Thanks for the try, if I force it on Pal it gives me a playback restricted message, the DVD is region free, as are many PAL DVD's that I have that work. It's really strange, what I do not understand is why SVCD work.

  4. If you get a worldmap, it is probably, an RCE protection on the DVD that is causing this. It is apparently sometimes possible to bypass this protection by first inserting a non-RCE protected DVD (from the same region) in your DVD player and then inserting, right after, your RCE protected DVD.

  5. Ok here I go again!
I tried to do something different I ripped a NTSC DVDre encoded it and created a NTSC SVCD and it plays fine, then I took the same video file and created a non standard DVD as per the instructions, that you can find on this website, to transfer a SVCD to DVD and guess what? black and white again!
What the hell is the difference, it's the same file. what is telling my dvd player that one is OK and the other is not is there some flag in the ifo file that prevents it from playing?
