Hi everyone!
I'm wondering about something here. I've just reinstalled WinXP Pro and then I noticed that my ripping process changed in speed. Let me explain: A long time ago when I first installed WinXP (no SP1) I could rip a DVD fine. It started out at about 2x and increased gradually to about 12x when the rip was done. After a couple of months it suddenly stopped increasing. It only ripped at 2x always. By then I had installed "Adaptec ASPI XP v4.71.1".
Now I've reinstalled WinXP (with SP1 but no ASPI)). Now it's like old times. It starts out at 2x and increases until the rip is done (about 12x). But I don't think I have any ASPI installed. Is this true and what is ASPI? Is it important? It seems that when I install my own ASPI, things get slow when ripping. How come? Shouldn´t I have ASPI?

If you are ripping you probably have some type of ASPI installed, even though you may not think you do. First, you should update to the "latest" version of ASPI. The latest version is 4.7.1.2, you are using older drivers.
I had this problem occur a couple of months ago. Several other people had the problem occur as well and there are many things that could cause it. In your case, it may be some type of software installed that changed a setting that is causing a cap on your rips.
There is also a very good chance that your Ultra DMA settings have been changed to PIO. Windows XP is notorious for this, and there is a patch that will prevent Windows XP from doing this. I had to actually reinstall my OS to rectify the problem. Since I have done that, I burn at an average of 12x and many times around 15.2-15.4x with a Liteon DVD ROM that cost me $10 after rebates. Not too bad huh? Anyway, check those settings IF you experience the cap again. Fortunately for me, this problem has not resurfaced since.
