  1. I bought the 370 Socket to Slot 1 converter ( pictured here: http://store.yahoo.com/joyluckshop/sy3slot1toso.html )and it came in today. The 933 PIII that I tried putting in it was appearantly dead.

Now I'm looking into getting a 1.0 ghz or 1.1 ghz Celeron processor from pricewatch or googlegear, but I have some concerns.

I found a pretty good page about my computer (Dell Dimension XPS T500) and its capibilities. ( http://www.roberthancock.com/dell/etherdude.htm )From what they say on the page, my motherboard can handle any Pentium III that was made but my question is (1) can it handle an equivalent Celeron that is 100 mhz bus speed?

(2)Also will the converter that I have only take a Celeron that is 300 ~ 500 mhz as advertised on the Kommax.com page, or does that mean something else.

(3)Last question (): How do Celeron processors hold up if I do a lot of encoding and stuff like that. I read in a lot of places that Celerons have a lot of overheating problems. Wouldn't the heatsink and fan eliminate most heating problems?

if you made it all the way down here, thanks for being patient

  2. I dont know about the newer Celeron's but I have a 400Mhz Celeron and done countless hours of encoding as well as other CPU intensive tasks without any heating or any other problems related to the CPU.

A Celeron of 1GHz will be OK for rendering. It will be a bit slow but will do the job.

There are 3 kind of 370 Celerons out there:

    1. PPGA: older king and up to 550MHz
    2. FCPGA: Up to 1.1GHz and worked in mon Tualatin Mobos
    3. FCPGA2: Up to 1.4 GHz but will need a mobo that support Tualatin.

Looks like your Slot to 370 converter will only support the older PPGA Celeron processors. Given this the Pentiun III you tested and a new 1 GHz Celeron will not work either.

I think you will need to buy a new Slot to 370 FCPGA converter and I would try aging the PIII.that maybe was not dead after all.

Also there a company called Powerleap than makes a Slot 1 to 370 FCPGA2 (Tualatin) upgrate. It includes a 1.4GHz Celeron and will cost around $150.

Take a look at it at http://www.powerleap.com/Products/iP3T.htm

  4. Thanks for the tip...seems to be a good deal but i want to make sure that a celeron 1.1 wont be supported by my slocket converter.

on the page on kommax.com it says
Celeron 300 ~ 500 cpu ... is that the range of speeds it supports or something else.
    _____
    EDIT

just found a page on my converter ( http://www.heatsinkstore.com/supsloccpuca.html )
doesn't this mean that it can support up to 1.2 ghz?
    ____________
    ANOTHER EDIT
    http://www.knowledgemicro.com/detail.php?p=CL1GFCPGA&c=pw
there is a celeron 1.0 ghz processor that is FC-PGA interfaced...it isnt FC-PGA2 like most of them are... so now i know that (1) my slocket can take up to 1.2 ghz provided that it is FC-PGA and (2) there is a celeron 1 ghz that is FC-PGA...doesnt this mean im good to go?

  5. e-z-e,
I have a 1.2Ghz Celeron and it works great and the temp.rarely gets above 86 degrees F.All 1.1-1.2Ghz are FCPGA socket 370 and the L2 cache is 256kb.The only thing I can think that would hold you back is your BIOS,check mobo website for latest update. If the latest update is before 11/2001 it(FCPGA)probably won't work.
Also spend the extra money and get a "Retail Boxed" CPU the warranty is 3 years as opposed to 14-90 days for OEM.
Another option is to buy a motherboard combo. as there are many under
    $100.

  6. those mobo deals are pretty enticing, but i think i might as well get a regular Celeron processor since i got this slocket converter contraption. couple more questions...

    1) if a processor comes with heatsink, how hard is it to remove and what do i need? (i think i would need to remove and reattach the heatsink and fan to fix the processor to the slocket)

2.) are celeron heatsinks smaller than pentium IIIs? (it seems that way)

    thanks,

  7. If you went out and bought a slocket I wouldnt buy a celeron as in intensive computing tasks eg 3d games and encoding... they are significantly slower than P3. Even a 550mhz P3 would probably outdo a 866 celeron on High Cpu tasks. I used to have a 566mhz celeron and upgraded to a 866 P3 and believe me it s about three to four times better. Go with the most powerful proc your mobo supports. Just coz your mobo may not say it supports xxx proc doesnt mean its so, its just that the faster speed cpus were not available at the time the mobo came out?. Get a retail cpu so you can take it back.

N.B. I use a slocket on my mobo and attaching it, and the fan and heatsink is a very snug fit, hence not to be done more than once!.

  8. but celeron is alot cheaper than pentium...im pretty sure 1.1 ghz celeron would cut my avg 22 hr encodes to at least 12 hrs. what heatsink/fan did you use? i need to figure out what im going to get because the latch that locks the 370 pin into place cannot close when the heatsink i took from the pIII 933 is on it.

  11. This isn't entirely on the topic, but here goes...

Why not just get a Duron 1.3 Ghz/mobo combo? The combo sells for about $75-$80 on Pricewatch - I bought two 1.1 Ghz combos back during Christmas season as gifts for friends, and now the 1.3s are the same price.

  13. STAY AWAY FROM THE CELERON

This chip is horrible! Please please please do not get one - Mhz these days really mean nothing (or else we wouldn't have much lower clock AMD processors competing with faster Pentiums- IE: 2800+ is clocked at 2.25 Ghz but is equal to a 2.8Ghz P4! It is just that intel market the Mhz bandwagon because most people are too stupid to think there is more)

For video editing the best would be a Pentium4 because of its long pipelone (20 stage vs. 10 on the athlon - but that has drawbacks overall but in video editing the p4 is "teh shiznit")

But the Celeron is a Pentium4 with everything that made it good taken out!

If you have to and are that cheap, do yourself a favor and buy a KT333 Motherboard for around 80 dollars, and a 1700+ AMD Athlon for 50 dollars and use that combonation.

Better yet, if you have to buy a slot1 to socket converter you might as well spend 500-600 dollars making a better computer.

But please do not listen to this that the Celeron is good.

If you need more information/second opinions please visit

    www.anandtech.com

and read the review there - then go to the forums and ask people what you should do if you want to video edit and i guarantee ALL will reject the Celeron and say A) If you have a big budget go for the Pentium4 because it does VERY well in video encoding or b)If you have a smaller budget go Athlon (but by no means is the athlon a lower preformer...in other tasks it give the p4 a beating, but in videoeditng the p4 wins out)

E-z-e it really seems you are confused just in general becase there is no such thing as a Intel Case or AMD case. There are different form factors (ie: Motherboard sizes...actually there are two. ATX which is the normal size and MicroATX and they are the smaller computers)

If you need any other help PLEASE go to Anandtech.com and feel free to ask me there (I go by the same name- magomago)

    2)
    a) Very slow
    b) Not as "very slow"
    c) Slow

Really, considering that a 1700+ can easily be had for 49.99 there is no reason to pick a processor of a lower tier. A 1.3Ghz Athlon is part of the thunderbird core and does'nt have SSE instructions which lower preformance significantly in cases where SSE is used

I hope my words got out to you because time is money and you could be encoding a LOT faster.

    Any other questions? PM me

I think a Pentium 4 is better and a Celeron on 1.0 GHz or 1.1 GHz as ok for this type of work in the computer.

The Pentium 4 would be able handle it much better. The Celeron wouldn't handle playing a DVD-ROM movie well compared with the Pentium 4 and this is an example and a guide you should look for.

I recommend a much better processor than the Celeron.

  16. finally got my hands on a piii 1ghz fcpga processor. for some reason it only runs at 750 mhz though. is this because my motherboard has a FSB of 100 Mhz and the piii 1ghz has a multiplier of .750 hence making it run at 750 mhz when running at 100 mhz? if this is the case, is there any way to make my 100 mhz mobo have a fsb of 133?

EZE you should check and BE CAREFUL with multipliyer settings, you can over clock and damage a CPU with that if you set it toooo high.

the Intel Celeron sucks compared to even the AMD Duron which is way cheaper than the Celeron.
The celeron only has speed but doesnt have the cache and the floating point calculation speed and other things that make the Pentium line up and for that matter Duron line up better...

    As compared to encoding...
A Pentium III running at 800 mhz ( if they actually made one at that speed) would beat a Celeron at 1 ghz in encoding time, heck you can even tone the p3 down if u want and still beat the celeron.
    As for heat dissaption...
you should get a quality Heat Sink and fan for your system so it can last longer

  20. You should consider getting a mobo+processor for 100-150 dollars than a Celeron at all costs...

No offenseve but "Mhz" isn't everything.

    a 1.6P4 and a 1600+ are still faster than a 2Ghz Celeron oc'd to 3Ghz even if its a 1000mhz faster....

    My idea: KT333 board (60-70 dollars) + 1700+(50 dollars) + 512 megs of pc2100/2700 ram (80 dollars) = happy for you

That setup would really the best and most cost effective if you are looking just to encode...and YES to those who are techies I KNOW that the P4 is faster when it comes to encoding due to raw bandwith but AMD is soo much cheaper (that and i'm running my 1700+ at 166mhz @1.75ghz :P ).

If you HAVE to have a celeron get a Tualtain as the new Celerons that are P4 based are so cripplied it isn't funny...but I think Tualtains stop at like 1.2ish Ghz but I would rather have a Duron anyways

  21. ok guys... i have a pIII 1ghz but my only problem is that it runs at 750 mhz instead of 1ghz...is this because my FSB is only 100 mhz or because im using a slocket 370 to slot one converter or what?

It looks like the CPU you got was designed to be used on 133 FSB mobos. Your PIII has the multiplier fixed at 7.5.

If you are using PC133 memory, you may try to overclock to the fastest stable speed handled by your system.

Sorry, I am just about to answer to an old post. My answer is NO! Best to upgrade to P4 or equivalent at least 2.0 GHz and better at 2.4 GHz.

Don’t buy a Celeron at all and at 1.1 GHz CPU with its motherboard you will be at a limit. Get something better than this crap.

I did find a Compaq computer with a Celeron as little slow with limitations especially using Win XP. So, I say don’t buy.

You say that getting more memory is the biggest help right? So if I have 1GB of 2100 running right now but my mobo can handle up to 3200, am I going to notice a significant difference when using the computer to play games or surf the internet?? Because I may go to a faster memory speed sometime in the next couple of years.

  30. slightly old topic but! in tests done at tomshardware.com they simply advocate
    for video encoding
that mhz are king. SO the faster the mhz the quicker the encode, above memeory above disk speed. However I think the celeron is a bad buy compared to the athlon xp which is a "full" processor and useful for many other things besides video encoding.
