Does anybody know if dvd's have an easier time reading coloured backings vs silver backing that you find on most cd's?

My understanding of this issue is that it's totally dependent on your player. If you check out the "DVD Players" section on this site, it has an awesome comparison list of players and what they will and won't do.

Any CD-R which has a reflective layer more like a DVD will be the best of course.
You might find this article about coloured dyes used on CD-R informative.
