I was wondering what was the point of rating CPU speed in Hertz for the poll when most people know that it's an extremely crude means of testing processors??

Yes everyone knows the proper way to test a processor is via flamware... shall be begin? just kidding.

Because it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

Plus that is the only way that MOST people know how to rate their cpu....I know it's the only way to rate mine, except for benchmarks.

I'm sorry for your ignorance (or a** sucking on some peoples part) but rating a CPU on hertz is like rating a car engine on litre size, there is no point in it. Don't worry you don't have a chance of hurting my feelings, actually it gratifies me to have p****d some of you off.

If you want to rate a CPU on least crude methods you could try MIPS or floating point operation but as tgpo kindly said most people only know how to rate it in hertz. (Not that this is the best method to rate processor but at least its better than hertz)

It's ignorant people who help Intel sell processors, not because they are fast, but because their clock speed is so high, no matter what price tag they put on it.

But the point I was trying to make is that some people have an "AMD Athlon XP" processor which is faster on terms of "speed/hertz" to the "Intel Pentium 4" and you could have at least split it up into two sections "Intel processors" and "AMD processors".

Thanks for reading this guff, I look forward to hearing anyones outlook on this subject (good or bad).

    Barry

  8. I don't know why you're getting so upset about something so trivial. It's not like people are making fun of you becuase you have an Athlon. I have an athlon running at 1.4 ghz, and I know that it's faster than a pentium at the same speed. It was supposed to be just a fun poll. The fastest way to tell somebody the speed of your processor is by the clock speed. Nobody is going to sit there and do benchmark tests or any other tests, and then put that in a poll. This forum was retarted when it began, just enjoy the polls, and get over it. If you want to, you can give us a full report on the "true" speed of you processor after some tests. I'm sure everyone will be very happy for you

Na I'm not PO'ed, I was just making a funny, takes alot more then that to hack me off. Anyone here ever seem me angry? I rest my case.

You are correct its a crude way to rate CPUs but as an easily accessable and undersandable stat its whats most often used. Heck compaire a P90 to a 486 100 and see the difference, arcitecture (sp?) makes a HUGE difference, thats why I personally am not building another new machine until the Athlon 64 desktop CPUs are out.

If all I cared about was raw mhz I wouldn't have got my AMD.

even AMD isnt following the ratings as they should - the AMD Barton XP3000+ CPU shouldn't be called a 3000 if the speed is in proportion to other amd cpu's. It also got kicked by the 3ghz + p4 in almost all measurements (except one) ..
it may be be considered a stupid name (any of the names) but both AMD and INTEL are public companies trying to sell a product, nether of which has a market lock on (thank goodness) .. and turn a good profit .. they have to name them something - and as long as companies need to buy pc's and people what to upgrade thier systems - they will nmame them whatever they want .. also remember the upgrade market is but a tiny drop in the bucket for overall sales ..

Thanks for the input that a few of you gave me , and as for tenders, I can't really expect an intelligent answer from everyone.

    Cheers
