converting MPEG2 files to other formats

I have a voodoo3 3500 TV graphics card/tv tuner combo.
i use the program to record tv or whatever.
i'm trying to compress the mpeg2 files i get
its about 300mb every 20 min of record time.

i have tried to use Windows movie maker, that program crashes on me everytime, some kernel program, despite fact its slow. so WMM is out of question.

i have tried TMPGenc, but their way expontential incrases file size so i can't do that either.

I want the files DIvxed, i don't know what programs to use, need suggestions.
