  1. Hey everyone

I just bought a Apex 660 DVD player and I want to start copying TV shows onto VCD.

What do I need to do it? Any links or helpful information?

I have a Sony CD burner and a fast computer. Now what else?

    Hi, you found it ?

Well depends, are you going to "Rip" the DVD's onto your hard drive then convert them into VCD.mpg ?

Or are you going to buy a capture card, and capture the movie onto your hard drive then convert it to VCD.mpg ?

This first produces very good quality, but takes for ever and a day. The second is the quickest and the quality is good.

  5. umm people he said tv shows not dvd. Easiest thing, yet expensive is to buy Terrapin..its liek vcr but it records vcds(off of auido like cd player,dvd,laserdisc,vcr..alomost anything) or yu could buy a video card that has a capture card(or somthing similr im no expert) then it hooks to ur tv and u can record an mpeg 1. then burn mpeg 1 to vcd and bam ya got it

  7. You see, this is exactly the type of question that gets nice little newbies flamed

The first thing you will need is a capture device of some kind (either a card or a small unit that plugs into a usb or parallel port). There is a wealth of info on capture cards to the left. It's the first one in the red section labled "OTHER".
    <--------------

Me, I use a Studio DC10+ from pinnacle (actually I have 2) and I love 'em!
But there are lots of cards out there.

Then, you will need an encoding program to make your captured video files into an MPG format that is VCD compliant. That is covered in the green section to the left right smack in the middle.between the "CAPTURE" and "CONVERT" sections. The favorite on this site seems to be TMPGenc (avialiable in the "TOOLS" section to the left in the red section)

You'll need a Cd burner, if you don't have one already, and a nice, friendly copy of Nero to burn it with.

    Voila! VCDs

Oh you have plenty of time yet, they don't start until Sept 26 then.

Gosh I would love 300 DVD's, are you rich ?. Can you lend me a few bucks ?.

Anyway, I guess by now you realize you need a capture card. I don't know of any really expensive ones maybe someone else does.

By the way have you seen my car? (Think hard)

    re: 300 DVDs
You don't need to be rich to own that many DVDs. My collection is about 130 and I paid for only 30-40 of them...and most of those were at drastically reduced prices. During the dotcom craze of 1999/2000, venture capitalists were throwing money at people to simply visit their websites.... that money (in the form of Amazon GCs) kickstarted my DVD collection

    re: Capturing
I recommend the Dazzle DVC. (I not II if you can find it) A few places still sell them, for about $140 USD. It is an MPEG-1 hardware capture device that attaches to the USB port. It can capture directly to VCD-compliant MPEG1 files...which can then be burned using Nero (or Adaptec/Roxio) EZ VideoCD Creator.

Some folks have tried maxing out the Dazzle's capture bitrate and then using TMPEGENC to drop it down to VCD specs with even better results.

  11. Depends on the money you want to spend I use the the Happauge WIN PVR PCI card that captures MPEG1 (VCD) or MPEG2 (SVCD) and even AVI which the dazzle cards will not do, plus dazzle had a major problem with most Duron or Athlon processors. But keep in min I paid $250, but is very happry with the result of SVCD copies for Satellite.
I also now of a very good MPEG1 and MPEG 2 USB card by Creative Labs calle Videoblaster moviemaker for $199.
I capture by hour shows with out commericals in 45min. put them on a 99min. CD-R and they work great, plus the PVR is a TIVO so you can capture directly to it even with a scheduler and comes with a wireless remote and can pause live TV.
But to get the best preformance out of this card, which is only sub par out of the box you must go to their german web site to get the upgrades.
A plus is that you can capture in the AVI format also.
I use TMPGE to edit out the commericals then demux then burn onto a CD-R as SVCD with NERO 5.5.
If you have Intel processor and don't need AVI capture then a Dazzle will do just fine, I would give a Moviemaker a try before buying a dazzle, moviemaker had the best MPEG1 VCD picture I have ever seen.

What you stole the rest ? Have you seen my car ?

    Jon0302

I use the WinTV card, $50 so I'm told in the US. It does not have mpeg capture like the more expencive ones, but works well with DivX AVI. Maybe you should start with a cheaper card, Unless your rich

Any body want to buy some old movies, I have 130 of them on DVD Some are hot !

  15. Get a replay tv. Record the shows and then once you feel you have enough, take out the hard drive and hook it up to the pc with ide cables and drag all the mpg files off it. They will be mpeg2 files(svcd), but the quality will be great, and its easy as hell. Remember replay tv is the only one you can do it with, not tivo, or ultimate. If you want to hook your computer up to the satelite and manually record eps with a vid card that half the time unsyncs sound, then do it one of the other ways. You said you have 300 dvd's, so I'm sure you can buy a replay tv!!

  16. Heh, even if I owned a Terrapin, I'd still re edit them and reburn. (Assuming, of course, they're able to BE ripped)
I like to add stuff, like intro screens, deleted scenes (if applicable), occasionally photo galleries. If I's gots da room, y'know?

  17. Rich, Yea Im rich if the Government didn't take 35% of Taxes every month!

I created my DVD collection with little money. Stealing them, well you can say that.

Ever heard of Media Play? Its a Store. They sell old cheap DVD's for 2.99 to 5.99 each. I go and buy the $3 DVD's and take them to the local DVD swap/trading store. The have every new DVD out. Some are used, some are new. I take the $3 DVD into the store and pay $2. I trade the DVD in and get a new one.

I probably spend a $100 a week or so on my little hobby. I am now collecting the DVD sets like X-Files, Stargate, ect.
Nothing like Season's 1-4 of the X-Files on DVD.

I am going to look into the Capture Card. Anyone have one for sale? I might look on Ebay first.

You can find some good deals on VCD's and DVD on Ebay.
I bought a few VCD's with over 250 episodes of the Simpsons for only $50 including overnight shipping.

    Hi

I guess it will work, I have seen a few posts around from people using this card. I think we all have problems trying to get DVD quality from these captures but its not possible. I use the WinTV, not a brilliant card and what it did on one VHS tape is different from what it might do on the next.

The quality of the source is very important, I just finished working on Banbi an old animation released a few years back on VHS. Well the quality coming through on RF was no use at all so I switched to Video in, finally ended up recording the audio with gold wave and converting to stereo.

So you see there is a lot of messing around, I recorded a DVD and converted it to VCD and the quality is very very good. The capture cards with direct mpeg are better but double the cost.
