I have been coding and decoding lots of movies on avi, but there are a few movies that i cannot open with VirtualDub, the error keeps coming its says

Couldnt Locate decompresor format xvid (unknown)
Virtualdub requires a video for windows (vfw) compatible codec to decompress video. Directshow codec, such as those used by Windows Media PLayer, are not suitable.

The thing is that i can open and see those video files on the Windows Media PLayer. the question is why i cannot in VirtualDub.

You need the XviD codec. Go to http://www.xvid.org and download the codec.

Sorry. That link only posts the source code, which has to be compiled. Try here instead.

Note, you may need the 3.11 Alpha version. There is a link for it on this page too.

Thanks DJ...I installed it but windows explorer was freezing up on it so i followed advice from another forum:

    Qeef says:
"Just use the FourCC changer (comes with the XViD codec), load the XViD code movie and put settings in both screens
    on DivX. NO OTHER!!!!
Then click APPLY...and you can encode as ussual!!!!
Works perfect and quality is the same."
It works and looks great in media player...I haven't tried converting it to svcd yet...but it loads fine in virtual dub...

Does anyone know what the FourCC changer does? I assume it only changes an extention of some kind?

Sounds like another codec package. You should be careful with these, as they tend to install things you dont' need, including spyware, along with codecs you don't need. You can get a spyware scanner here:
