  1. Does the recording surface color make a difference in set top / stand alone player compatibility?

I bought a Pioneer 104 along with some Gold top/ silverish bottom DVD-Rs a while ago. I created 1 movie using Ulead Video studio 6 then burned it with chapters etc using Sonic DVDit PE and it worked fine. I used the rest of the disks for PS2 backups.

I bought some bulk generic DVD-Rs white top / purple bottom. Using the same procedure the disk reported "NO PLAY" in my set top/ stand alone player. It workes fine in the computer using ATI DVDplayer.

I bought a combo pack of Memorex DVD-R/RW (3 each in the box) I used the DVD-RW and it worked, it had a silverish bottom. Then I used the DVD-R and it DID NOT WORK! It had a purple bottom.

    I am very frustrated!!
I have read many forums and I am sorry if I missed this subject.

But does the color make a difference?

Also what DVD-Rs have a silver recording surface? I would like buy some to see if they are compatible with my set to player but no one seems to list the recording surface color.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!
    THANKS

  2. kinda reminds me of early CD burnings day of 1x - 4x when we were in the same postion of finding good fast inexpensive media. Color (DYE) and manufacturer were key to good batches and successful burns.

We have something to be optmistic about, Today most CD-R are of good quality inexpensive. I say when DVD burners start burning at 8x times our media situation should get much better

I'm pretty sure the color can affects the reflectivity which certinly affects how good the disk work with some players.

Yeah I remember the early CDR days I had a friend with a 2x SCSI burner and he would burn a CD for us if we brought him 2 blacks (one for us one for him) or we could buy him a carton of smokes, it was the same cost either way.

I also remember going to my local Microcenter an seeing the generic version of the Verbatim (blue bottoms, we called them Verbatim blues) for ONLY $2.50 each! From that point on I picked up at least 4 every paycheck.... now fastforward to today and people hate the idea of paying more then 16 bucks for a 100 pack, nevermind its 100 crappy disk most of the time...

  4. Do any of you know what DVD-R brands have a silverish recording surface?

I am 100% sure my purple ones will not work in my stand alone player.

    OR
Is there a new stand alone player that plays purple ones?
    THANKS

  5. I have no issues playing DVDPro media which has a dark purple recording surface.

Recorded Video using a Panasonic DMR-E30

The standalone unit is the Apex 500WM.

They also read/play fine on my computer using A104 drive.

Never seen silver sorry, with the media quality issues I doubt we'll see anyone playing with color for colors sake anytime soon.... or who knows there may be a reason why they cant.
