1. I've had a major break through and I feel I should share it with all of you so that nobody makes the same mistakes I did.

It is now my opinion that there is no need for the making of VCD's every again REGARDLESS OF YOUR DVD PLAYER'S COMPATIBILITY
My major breakthrough was the discovery of the "Non VCD compliance" option in NERO.

This allows you to fool you dvd player into thinking that the file is up to vcd standards but really you can adjust the bit rate which was my major problem because of the lower rate after I had captured a crystal clear image when I converted to the "official vcd" standard I lost clarity and basically it came out as crap....now I did proceed to use various tmpgenc filters as well as virual dub filters.....but now I no longer have to do this because I can capture with a higher bit rate and LEAVE IT THIS WAY.

I realise this is common knowledge to many but I am posting this clarification because I am so ecstatic that I've finally solved the poor VCD quality problem. Some people refer to this as XVCD but I do not because the way I did it I didn't tamper with any of the settings except the video bit rate so I refer to it as MVCD "modified". Also realise that I have not invented or created anything many people know this but I just don't think it is emphasized enough.

The following is a link to a step by step guide on how to create such a file and please beleive me when I say it's worth it.

2. This is a good writing to help newbee.
Yes, lot of people have been doing it for quite a while to improve VCD quality. And we all call this XVCD.
But beware that not all DVD players can play XVCD (I have 3 Pioneers and two can, one cannot play VCD with bitrate higher than 1150 Kbits).

3. Thanks for the reply.
I'm curious why everyone calls it an Extended Video Cd XVCD when your not extending it at all? There are other modifications which I thought would make it compliant to XVCD "standards" althought its not really a standard. (I.E-> Changing the compression to EXTEND it) somebody set me straight I'd appreciate it

XVCD "standards"
Problem is, there is no such thing. It just short hand for "A VCD formated video CD where the MPEG doesn't comply with VCD standard, but is still MPEG1 video and MP2 audio". Changing resolution, changing audio bitrate, changing audio sample fq, changing video bitrate, using VBR will make the final CD not to qualify as a VCD. Excellent explanation tho, for those who persist in using Nero to author their (S)(X)VCD!

6. I have heard people are getting svcd quality with mpeg1 files, I must presume they are using svcd (or close ) resolutions? . This sounds like an interesting concept that I havent tried yet. Hmm mpeg1 @ 480x576?? and vbr??
N.B. DO NOT GO TO MAT NEAVES LINK ITS A HOST!!
Corned beef is now made to a higher standard than at any time in history.
The electronic components of the power part adopted a lot of Rubycons.

7. Does SVCD have a higher bit rate than VCD ?
If I undertsand correctly: You encode the avi file as SVCD (mpg) and burn it using Nero and deactivate standard compliant CD. Is this correct ?

To All,
I have been using xvcd for some time now with excellent results. My parameters are:
352x480
bitrate adjusted per length of movie in order to fit wholly onto 2/3 discs.
frame rate according to film type
GOP structure 1/5/2 (I/B/P)
all else are the default tmpgenc supplied defaults for standard VCD.

I would love to be able to do cvd but my player will not handle mpeg2 except as dvd, not svcd or xsvcd.

One "problem" with 352x480 is that many sources are not more than 288/240 (PAL/NTSC VCD) high, so stretching it to 480 is just a waste of resolution. However, if the source vert resolution > VCD vert res, going for 480 vertical resolution may produce better results.
As always, VCD is a standard, that a player either promises to play or won't play. XVCD is trial and error.

10. Before I bought my DVD writer I would use DVDx and make a 720x480 MPEG-1 384mp2 profile and burn using Nero as stated above and they look great(compared to 352x240).My Mintek 2110 plays all but SVCD,so it all depends on your DVD player.

11. what do you mean dont go to mat neaves its a host, whats yer problem

its only a word document explainign very easily how to fit movies or whatever onto 1 cd, it took me 4-5 months to work out how to do it with good results, all i wanted to do is to share my knowledge with anybody having probs, it ues the same tools that are available on this site, but some people are getting confused what to do with them

if you already know then fair enough but dont try to stop others from learning, my document is straight forward and simple (i hope)

if anyone want me to send them through email then let me know and i will forward it to you

theres nothing bad in clicking on the link, all my m8s have done it and downloaded the word doc, it doesnt show anything of me site, just says "do you wish to download this document", click yes, and there its done
if asnyone has probs with doing that i suggest they dont bother with clicking on any links on any other pages, i dont get anything from people clicking it
