  1. Hi, as a newbie trying to make a SVCD I ran into some difficulties; hope someone can help me out here.. (MacOS10.1.2/PAL/sourceV from 3CCDcamcorder/edit: iMovie)

I can’t seem to get ffmpeg0.0.6e installed; I have downloaded it, with the mpeg2enc file(?) and the last binairy 250103 folder containing mplayer & mencoder (files?). These tree are placed somwhere in ‘Home’. I use the installer, set the locate windows, hit install, fill in the password, terminal says installation succesfull,..
Now I quit the terminal and the installation window shows up again. I just quit the installer to and try to open ffmpegX by clicking; it begins starting up -and then stops just as quickly. What is going on? Maybe some problem caused by a bad DevTools install?
Also it’s possible that there are some other things missing..?

  2. It's quite possible that your copy of mpeg2enc didn't download right.

If Internet Explorer or Safari trys to download the file, it will often append it with a .TXT or even put code in the first few lines of the file to identify it as a Text file...

I had very similar problems. To get the file in good condition try pasting this into your terminal window.
    Code:
    cd /Users/Shared && curl http://mjpeg.sourceforge.net/MacOS/mpeg2enc -O
Once you do that try installing the files again, but using this downloaded version of mpeg2enc.

Then give ffmpeg a try again.... PS 0.0.6f is out now.

  3. Thanks, I had no idea.. (& yes, I'm using Explorer)
But I just 'discovered' that ffmpegX needs OSX 10.2 so it won't work on my 10.1.2 (even upgrading to 10.1.5 is practical impossible because I haven't got cable )
So here's the next question; what programs can I use on my 10.1.2 for making a basic SVCD -I don't even realy need sound if that helps.. Maybe some previous version of ffmpegX or a simular program?
Forgive me if I'm asking things that u pro's take for granted, but I just don't seem to get anywhere at all on my own here!

    Just to inform you
    FFMPEGX does required 10.2

The difference between 10.1 and 10.2 (besides the obvious) is its structuring of directories and folder placements. Thus, when ffmpegx looks for a particular file in a particular location, 10.1 will not have the structuring for this file.

As such, it just will not work. Suggest upgrading to 10.2
The only other option you have is to use older programs

One that comes to mind is Media Pipe
You would have to extract the movie file and run it though the media pipe using its MPEG2 converter
This will be one rather large file. You will need to split it (some how) not sure how to do this, but when you split it its easy to make it into a SVCD format.

Once this is done and synced properly, just use a vcdimager (i think vcdgear) is its name to package your mpeg2 files into svcd format.

    Best of luck to you

To save you time and headache using media pipe and getting it to sync (if you ever can!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) I highly recommend the investment to upgrade to jaguar.

Not sure of your computer type, but on a 500mhz G4 it would take days!!!!!!!!
Now I have a Dual 1.25ghz with Jaguar and it takes maybe 4-5 hours tops using Fourty-Two

Its well worth it. Plus you get a much better system!

  5. Thanks a lot, I will upgrade asap, but in the meantime I still want to try making a short SVCD of just a few minutes(no audio needed).
I managed to export a short video from iMovie (DV.mov) - import / adapt & saving it in QTPro (creating a ‘HQ’ .mov file) - exporting the audio to a .wav file - used Mediapipe0.8.9 to turn the .mov into a .mpv file (is there a way of checking this is a genuine .mpv file?), but...
When I try to feed my .wav file (saved in QTPro) to MissingMpeg Tools0.9.1 (mp2enc) it didn’t work. Can I not just package the video .mpv file without the audio?
I'd like to use the vcdimager like you suggested, but I'm not familiar with the Terminal.. Downloaded VCDGearOSX1.6e - opened it and this is what shows up in the terminal:

    Welcome to Darwin!
    /Users/carlofre/Desktop/VCDGear\ for\ OSX\ 1.0.sit.1/OS\ X/VCDGearOSX1.6e; exit
    [localhost:~] carlofre% /Users/carlofre/Desktop/VCDGear\ for\ OSX\ 1.0.sit.1/OS\ X/VCDGearOSX1.6e; exit

VCDGear v1.6e build 082401 coded by Dracore (dracore@home.com)
Usage : VCDGear [options] [@file.lst] inputfile outputfile

    Options: -cue2raw -cif2mpg -mpg2raw
    -cue2dat -mpg2mpg -mpg2bin
    -cue2mpg -nrg2mpg -cif2bin
    -raw2dat -mpg2dat -nrg2bin
    -raw2mpg -dat2mpg -sfd2mpg

@file.lst (optional) contains list of MPEGs to process
/v:"vol name" a 32-char volume label for cd image output

-track## extract only track ## from a multitrack image
-r#### force read of ####-byte sectors
-w#### force write of ####-byte sectors
-nobumper removes CD-i MPEG sequence bumper
-fix fix broken MPEG blocks during .mpg output
-noinit don't add initial sequence during fix
-nosplit don't split MPEG files based on timecode
-passive process a file but don't write output
-toast generate Toast compatible MPEG files

    logout

So what do I do now? (I have got a .mpv file that must be prepared for writing SVCD)
And even if this works how do I have to write it on CD ..(using MMB0.4 since I don't have Toast?)

I still won't give up so easily..
