  1. Hi all,

I have a weird problem with TMPGenc lately, Iv tried reinstalling (including diffrent versions)

What happens is whenever I goto open a file for conversion, the program closes itsself down, and if I get as far as conversion, I sometimes get "memory errors", but Ihave 512Mb of fast DDR ram, so whats the problem with my TMPGenc? :'(

Maybe it is faulty RAM? Mine was! I had very few problems with the PC except for encoding, which nearly always ran with unpredictable results (stopped short, gave memory errors, rebooted pc,...)

I tested the RAM with MEMTEST (searched on google and selected several of the many!!)

Anyway, it showed errors (and sometimes rebooted the PC). So I replaced the 512MB PC2700 DIMM and I've not had a problem like it since. (Fortunately, the RAM was only a few months old so the shop swapped it for me )

  4. thanks for making the point Grumpy, but I follwed KingJohn and checked out the VFAPI plug ins, and for some reason some were set to nagative priority, after resetting them all to 0 I managed to encode Amercian Beauty, no less, last night no probs.

Thanks anyway, although I must admit I am a bit dubious/sceptical of whats going on as they were memory errors, and Iv never had mem errors before

  5. For some reason I am experiencing the shutdowns also.

But changing the environmental settings doenst change anything about it.

I am using w2k pro...and everything else is wrking fine, just not tmpgenc...

is there anything else I could try?

  6. I had problems with encoding MPEG 2 with TMPGenc or any other program even after trying an exhaustive set of operating systems and option combinations. Turned out the fan had died on my processor heatsink. The cooling in the case and the motherboard was stable enough that all my other software ran fine.

MPEG 2 encoding is so intensive it raised the temperature to a point I would get a memory error of some sort. TMPGenc would fail and things would cool back down. Never did other software have any problems and I had previously encoded things ok. While finally figuring out the real problem, I tried some burn in and diagnostic software. It never failed and it did not raise the temperature high enough to fail. Only TMPGenc was intensive enough to run the temperature up high enough to cause a failure.

I now have temperature monitoring software running. Next computer will have a burn in test period running TMPGenc as well.

I guess the moral of this that the real cause of the problem may not be obvious. Things to suspect are memory, power supply, and thermal issues.

The thing is that I am only trying to convert a 20 seconds long file. And I am thinking that should not cause a big temperature rise. And it is avi - > VCD (mpeg-1)...So I am guessing it must be something else...

    please help...

  8. thanks a lot, but I found the propblem...

a bad file was indeed the problem i had. I selected a source range and the file ewas encoded without any problems.

Will this happen with each conversion-software package? Or is this a specific problem of TMPGenc?

I am thinking about using Ulead Video Studio or DVD workshop for conversion and authoring from now on...

Or is there an even better solution?
