Can anyone explain why the variable bitrate encoding in the MainConcept encoder takes only one pass to get the required filesize?
Also, does the quality compare well with CCE?

Bottom line is it guesses. It seems to do pretty well, but a multipass would be better and they are working on it (due out soon).
The quality is comperable to TMPEGEnc, which is to say not quite as good as CCE at this point. Single pass to single pass, I would rate it inbetween the two, but a bit closer to TMPEGEnc (although all three are really quite good). -
Multipass is to be supported in release 1.4 and any legitimate 1.X serial will work on a 1.X release. http://www.mainconcept.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=123
Due to the speed, quality, price and ease its the only thing I'm using now. -
with the correct settings - its look ahead in single pass is excellent ...
