YOU GUYS are talking about DUAL LAYER DISCS listed below

THESE ARE TWO BURNABLE SIZE DISCS GLUED TOGETHER
    you cannot do this yourself!

(its not the DVD-5 format you burn that holds 4.7 or 4.3gig))

    dual layer specs:

    DVD-9 (12 cm, SS/DL) 7.95 gig (8.54 BB), about 4 hours
    DVD-10 (12 cm, DS/SL) 8.74 gig (9.40 BB), about 4.5 hours

A DVD10 is NOT dual layered!!
DVD9 and DVD18 are dual layered.
    A DVD10 is doublesided.

All of above and DVD5 are premastered DVDīs.
You cannot burn a premastered DVD but there exists doublesided
DVD R/RW that can contain 9.4 GB of data

Bottom line: you cannot wite to DVD9 or DVD10 media with existing equipment. (like the current SONY or Pioneer drives)
